Hello from Camp ASCCA. I’m John Stephenson and I am the current administrator of Easter Seals Camp ASCCA.
My first experience with Camp was in 1986. That summer I was the lakefront program director. At that time, that position was responsible for canoeing and boat rides. I lived in Redstick cabin and had a great summer. By the winter of 1986, I was ready to come back. I called Tom Collier and was hired again as the lakefront director the next year.
During those two summers I was a student at the University of Northern Iowa. In 1987, I received my degree from the university and headed south. From the spring of 1988 until the spring of 1995 I worked at Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital in Rome, Ga., as a therapeutic recreation specialist. In March of 1995, I was hired by Camp ASCCA to be the Camp Director of Camp Civitan. This Camp had been given to Camp ASCCA to be used as a camp for adults with mental disabilities. It was there that I had the opportunity to learn every aspect of what it takes for a camp to function. I live at that location with my family. It now is my weekend job, which I still enjoy.
In February of 2003, I was hired to be the third administrator of Camp ASCCA. This job has been another great learning experience. The most important lesson I have learned so far, is that every piece of the Camp ASCCA puzzle is very important. Every camper, counselor, volunteer, board member, supporter and professional plays an important and unique role. It takes everyone working in the same direction in ensure the continued success of this great program.

Hi!!!!!
Have seen Lisa for lunch several times lately, and she said that she had contacted you. So, thought I would too! That is so great that you have been promoted to administrator!
I’m working for Babies’ Can’t Wait part-time as contract employee for Health dept. Not getting enough work, so recently started back doing crafts after about an 8 year break. Doris and I both have stuff in a downtown store. She’s doing really beautiful jewelry. Still going with Mike-it’s kind of a dysfunctional relationship-but that works for me, I guess. I see Amy (Jim’s daughter), and my step-granddaughter pretty often. Have been traveling a lot to Florida because of my parents, and to Gatlinburg, as Mike’s Mom has a chalet there.
How is your family?
We have gotten to talking again about stuff “back in the day”, and of course, your great friendship and sense of humor that helped us all get through everything.
