Cathy Jones:: Accountant

Cathy JonesHello! My name is Cathy Jones and I live in Alexander City, Ala., with my husband Max of 35 years. I graduated from Auburn University in 1979 with a degree in Accounting. I just started my 15th year as Camp ASCCA’s accountant and I love my job! This is my third full-time job since graduation.

In 1991, my employer sold his business and I was seeking employment. A friend of mine, whose daughter was the Secretary at Camp ASCCA, told me about the position. I came out for the interview and was hired shortly thereafter.

I handle all accounting functions including, but not limited to, payroll, receipts, disbursements, deposits, general ledger and production of monthly financial statements. All cash and every check remitted to camp for whatever reason comes across my desk at some point. I am responsible for the proper recording and classifying of all receipts to fee payments, special events, undesignated contributions or donations designated for a specific purpose.

…Cathy has been the accountant at Camp ASCCA since 1991…

As I process each receipt, I look at the various amounts and addresses of our donors and wonder what story lies behind each one. Whether it’s a gift of $5 or $5,000, I am always reminded that there are many wonderful, caring people in the world. One day as I visited my dad in the nursing home, his neighbor came in the room. She took a $1 bill from her pocket, handed it to me and said with a big smile, “Just use this at Camp ASCCA where it is needed most.”

Accounting is much simpler now than when I first came. All checks were typed on a typewriter as well as all correspondence. Payroll was done on a peg-board – during summers we would have as many as 100 employees – and all receipts and disbursements were hand-recorded in a “big” book. Thank goodness for computers! As I stated earlier, this is my third full-time job since college. My two former employers sold their businesses, but I’m not worried. Camp ASCCA is not for sale! The camp has come a long way, is still moving forward into a great future and I’m thankful to be a part of it.
