Camp ASCCA Journal - Therapeutic Recreation

Hi! I am Heather White. I am one of the newer members of the Camp ASCCA staff, having started in November of 2005 as a program specialist. So everyone can get to know me a little better, here is some background information.

I graduated in August of 2004 with a degree in therapeutic recreation from the University of Southern Mississippi. During my two years at the University of Southern Mississippi, I was able to work on grants dealing with people with disabilities in the local school system and with the city of Hattiesburg. After graduation, I was offered a supervisory role working with the schools. Before coming to Camp ASCCA, I worked shortly at a rehab in Gulfport, Miss. I was working there when I heard about the job opening at Camp ASCCA.

I was introduced to Camp ASCCA when I did my internship under Matt Rickman during the summer of 2004. I worked on the outdoor adventure staff at the zipline and treehouse. I was amazed at all the camp had to offer and the enjoyment the campers got out of accomplishing each activity. After completing my internship, I knew that I would love to work full time at Camp ASCCA if the opportunity came.

I live here at camp with my husband, West. We have been married since September of 2004. West is currently enrolled in Auburn University’s graduate program. He is working on his master’s in geology. Although West is not directly involved with Camp ASCCA, he loves the atmosphere and purpose as much as I do.
