Hey, this Nathan Waters. I am originally from Cullman, Ala., but now I make Jackson’s Gap my home. This is the beginning of my first year to be a full-time staff member. My official title is “program specialist,†but I’m mainly in charge of the outdoor adventure areas of Camp ASCCA.
I first came to Camp ASCCA in 2003 to visit a friend. It just so happened that I was looking for a summer job in Auburn and couldn’t find anything. My friend, knowing that I wanted a job, asked around and helped me get a job as a counselor. I absolutely fell in love with the campers and haven’t been able to leave. I also worked as many fall and spring weekend camps as possible. Since Camp ASCCA is so close to Auburn, I was always looking for an excuse to come out here. I came back to camp the following two summers to work as a counselor and head counselor.
I graduated from Auburn University with a degree in exercise science in the fall of 2005. I was very fortunate to graduate at the same time ASCCA was looking for full-time positions. I jumped at the opportunity and interviewed for program specialist and here I am.
I have numerous special memories at camp, but my favorite ones involve campers. The one memory that sticks out in my mind is my first camper, Jercolbie. He is one of the funniest people I know. He made me laugh the entire week. His unbelievable thoughtfulness is something I will never forget. He is just an all-around awesome person.

nathan i am happy u working in ascca i see u august 13
I read your post and I’m glad that you were able to obtain a good position with ASCCA. You spent a lot of time (i.e. on-the-job training) with the company and it was obvious that this aided you in acquiring your full-time position after you graduated from university. Companies love hiring people they know are loyal as well as someone they don’t have to train (since it has already been done through your experience with them). What people tend to forget sometimes is that patience is a real virtue when it comes to moving forward in your chosen career. Many people go to college and think that if they donate a little of their time here and there, that would be all they need to obtain the start of a dream situation. You have proven to us fortunate enough to read this that it does take time, a lot of work, faith in the job, and faith in yourself to move onwards in your career goals. I commend you for what you have accomplished so far and I look forward to reading how you continue this upward slope towards your goals. Take care.
