Alabama’s Special Camp for Children & Adults

A fun day at WylieRosa!

John, Dana and I - along with several other folks - had a great time on Saturday at the fishing tournament at WylieRosa! It was a tad chilly in the morning, but it warmed up a bit around noon. Or maybe that was just because I was out standing by the grill a lot then. ;-)

A couple ladies from Georgia, who called Camp ASCCA last week looking for more information, brought their horses and spent the morning exploring the property on horseback. There were certainly people out fishing on the lake, and even more congregating around the camp house - which became a lively place to be come lunchtime!

Many thanks to the Publix on Zelda Road in Montgomery, Ala.! They provided all the food for the day. With hot dogs, hamburgers and all the fixings - plus drinks, cup cakes, plates, napkins, etc. - we were good to go when it came time to eat! Terry Lurie, the bakery manager, and his wife, Sally McDine, who also works at the bakery there, were even on site to help with things. It certainly was a pleasure meeting them, and we greatly appreciate their support.

We enjoyed some great venison cooked up by Richard Chavers and his son Hunter, from Prattville. I wanted the recipe, but Richard wouldn’t share. It’s a secret, apparently! But they were kind enough to wrap some up for me to take home, and I enjoyed that throughout the rest of the weekend.

Really, my favorite part of the whole event was just getting to meet everyone. Dana and I walked around and took pictures and chit-chatted with people as we went. There’s a nice fireplace inside the camp house, which provides greatatmosphere for swapping stories and sharing histories.

All in all, we raised over $200 at the fishing tournament. A great big thank you goes out to the nice people at Publix, all the people who came out and contributed, and of course — Mr. Wylie C. Johnson for putting all this together and being so hospitable!
