Preparing for Fun Fish Weekend!

On Wednesday, I got to sit down and chat about Fun Fish Weekend with Josh Rhodes, the environmental education director at Camp ASCCA. (It all kicks off tomorrow!) Fun Fish is a weekend that brings in mostly campers who have been to camp before, and all they do for the whole weekend … is fish!
Camp ASCCA recruits boaters - mostly local, but some from around the state and surrounding area - to take the campers out on the lake to try to catch an award-winning fish. “It is competitive,” said Josh, “but in a friendly way. We have prizes, but our goal is to have everybody win something.”
“Volunteers only have to donate their time and minimal fishing supplies,” he said. The camp furnishes all supplies: bait, etc. and can provide gas if needed. Camp ASCCA also provides food for everyone throughout the weekend, and also lodging to those from out of town.
Part of Josh’s job in preparing for Fun Fish is coordinating donations for prizes. Both organizations and individuals are very generous in providing the funds needed to buy the prizes for the weekend. Josh noted that even more prizes should come in once the volunteers start arriving. “It’s nice,” he added, “because they’ll just show up with armfulls of stuff saying, ‘So-and-so asked me to bring this for ya’ll.’” This event, of course, wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of such people, as well as the boaters who are kind enough to take part.
