Saint James School:: Day 1

The group from St. James arrived today! After unloading and getting settled, the group set out for their first session. They split up in to seven smaller groups and went their separate ways to each activity. We have some pictures of two of the day’s activities …

Dick and Mary Anne Bronson, with Lake Martin Lake Watch, took one group down to the stream near the pond for the “Living Streams” program. After a description of the Alabama watershed and the rivers and streams running through our area, the group of students, volunteers and parents took off their shoes and got in the stream to see what kind of “bugs” and other macroinvertebrates they could find! At the end of the program the students were happy to report that the “bugs” they found were an indication of a stream with excellent water quality!

Student Peyton Brannon and her mom, Vickie, were there and Peyton was excited to find a Mayfly! She was very anxious to find out what in the world she’d found and asked three volunteers what it was! Dick Bronson said that it was a very good, not-so-often found “advanced-stage mayfly”.

Doug Darr, with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, conducted his “Step Outside and Fish” program with another group of St. James students. After a discussion about fish habitats and other pond issues, the group learned to tie knots and rig their fishing poles! Mr. Doug also threw out a challenge of “giving $10 to anyone who breaks the 10 1/2 lb. fish record!”

Another mom and daughter team, Jane and Alex McClain, were enjoying casting and fishing. Alex said she had fished before and actually “did some deep-sea fishing last year”. She was having a great time, but “was really looking forward to the zip-line too!”

Tonight after dinner, the whole group will wear themselves out even more by participating in ball field games.

The weather is beautiful and warm and we look forward to more environmentally educational activities tomorrow!
