Today, Camp ASCCA welcomes groups from Horseshoebend and Reeltown schools. They brought in three more groups of 3rd through 6th graders, who will be rotating through the same environmental education programs as the groups that were here yesterday.
I caught up with one group in the Environmental Center to snap a few pictures and chat with people. The kids seemed to really be enjoying themselves!
When I stepped in, Josh was in the middle of his introduction speech. This was the first time I’d gotten to listen in to Josh “do his thing” with the kids, and I was blown away! He is SO good at what he does! I couldn’t help but be impressed listening to him convey the importance of taking care of our planet to the kids: “Earth is the only planet in this solar system with life on it … so it’s our job to take care of it.”
He wrapped up his initial talk by explaining to the kids how the rest of the session would work. They would have about 15 minutes to explore the Environmental Center and then … they would play a game! He’s put together an environmental education version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire!” Once he said “go” there was a stampede of kids rushing to explore the center and learn as much has they could, so they could win points for their team in the upcoming game.
“The real learning,” Josh said, “happens during the game when I ask questions and they don’t know. Then we can walk out and I can show them and explain.”
In talking with Ms. Nancy Scott, I discovered that they hadn’t brought a group out to Camp ASCCA in a while. “Not since they built the Environmental Center,” she said. “This is wonderful! All the kids come out of here saying, ‘That place is SO cool!’”
We’re glad that these classes could join us out at camp, and hope they come back in the future!
