On Tuesday, Camp ASCCA welcomed the 3rd and 4th grade gifted classes from Stephens School in Alexander City.
The group had a FULL day — 9 to 5:00! In the morning, they were split up in to just two large groups.
Half of them went headed over to take part in Josh’s program at the Environmental Center. The students got to participate in the “Who Want to be a Millionaire” game that I mentioned in an ealier post, and the staff got some great feedback about the students’ enjoyment with that program!
The other half took part in some group elements / team-building activities. And then, of course, the groups switched, so everyone got a chance to experience everything!
After lunch, the students were re-organized into three groups. They split up and headed their separate ways: to the zipline, to Living Streams, and to the new GPS program. Tom Collier, Camp ASCCA’s public affairs assistant, and Dick Bronson with Lake Martin’s Lake Watch led the the students in the Living Streams program. Tom was able to catch a few pictures of students taking part in the program, so I’ve included a few of them here.
This was the first time the new GPS program had been introduced into the overall program, and it sounds like it was a huge success! First of all, the students were given compasses and taught hour to find direction using that. Next, utilizing the Garmin Etrex GPS units, they learned how to read lattitude and longitude. Finally, they were able to combine the use of that device with the compass to participate in a geocaching activity. The students were given coordinates and then had to use the tools they had to find those locations — where they’d uncover a hidden treasure! They did extremely well with the activity!!
