Alabama’s Special Camp for Children & Adults

The McLendon Family

Idiscovered as I was looking over the list of campers this afternoon that three of them share the same last name. After a little investigation, I learned that we had three campers who were related. Greg, Reginal, and Letitia McLendon came to camp this week as a family.

Both brothers and the sister have Cerebral Palsy, as well as MuscularMcLendon Brothers Dystrophy. Each of them utilizes a wheelchair to get around. Despite the differing severity of their disabilities, each can find therapeutic recreation opportunities here at Camp ASCCA.

I was able to see each one participate in various activities this afternoon. Greg and I sang along during music in the chapel, I looked on as Letitia worked on a puzzle in the game room, and I went to the fishing pond to watch Reginal do a little fishing.

After they had finished at each place, I caught up with the brothers to talk with them about camp and each other. The picture is of Reginal (left) and Greg (right). The following video is 3:05 minutes and is a 4.36MB download.

Hey Katie (& Danielle if she is still there!)
I just wanted to let you both know how much I have enjoyed reading about your experiences at Camp ASCCA this summer. It’s been about a week since I last “checked in” on things. I just read Danielle’s article “Camp ASCCA and All Our Friends Will Live Within Our Hearts.” It is clear that both of you have enjoyed yourselves to the fullest as I hoped you would at the beginning of the summer. I wrote to you then and wished both of you the best of luck with the adventure I knew you were about to have! I’m so pleased to see that camp has touched your hearts in a way that will last forever.
Thank you for all of the good work you’ve done this summer and good luck in the future.
    Best wishes,
    Allison

    Allison,
Thank you for taking the time to read what Danielle and I had to write about throughout the summer. I enjoyed just about every minute that I spent here at camp. I know that reading about it is not the same as being here, but I know it gives you a good idea about how much fun we all are having. Camp has touched my heart and I will never be the same when I leave this place. Good luck to you too Allison.
    Katie
