Donavan Harrison Returns To Camp ASCCA … sort of …

Wwhen I was a counselor at ASCCA there are several campers I vividly remember from those early days. Donovan Harrison is one of them.

…Well, I must say that being born with cerebral palsy is very hard to deal with.

Donovan is memorable for various reasons. First, he was a strong advocate for people with disabilities. Second, he had a special way of expressing those feelings through his writings - particularly his poetry.

The quote to the right is from Donovan’s Web page and it reminds me of how he would sometimes discuss his frustrations.

donovan_and_wife_small.jpgImagine my delight when Donovan visited the ASCCA site and left this message. I see that things are going quite well for Donovan these days. The photo to the right is Donovan with his wife Patricia.

Remember me? It has been a long time. I am married now, and have been for 5 years to a wonder woman. I just thought that I would drop you a line or two and let you know that I am still alive.

    What an wonderful suprise! Hello to Donovan. It is great to hear that you are doing so well.
    I’ve thought of Donovan many times throughout the years. I still own a book of his poetry that I will always treasure. I encourage everyone to check out his work. It is excellent.

    I have tought of Allison a lot, because she has touch my life and heart. She have made me see that my C.P. is not any thing to be sad about. I remember one night during the camp good-night song, everybody were holding hands. Not thing at the time, I stated to grbing for Allison hand. After while, we look at each other and strted laughing! Allison is a wonderful girl to get to know.

    THIS IS DONOVAN’S WIFE PATTI…DONOVAN TALKS ABOUT CAMP & THE PEOPLE THERE SO OFTEN. HE HAS SO MANY GOOD MEMORIES OF CAMP…
    WE’VE TALKED ABOUT COMING TO VISIT, BUT HE’S AFRAID HIM & I COULDN’T STAY TOGETHER AT NIGHT, AND, HE’S AFRAID THERE WOULDN’T BE MANY PEOPLE LEFT THERE THAT HE KNOWS. I THINK IT WOULD BE A GREAT IDEA IF YA’LL WOULD HAVE A RE-UNION…OF OLD CAMPERS & WORKERS.
