Alabama’s Special Camp for Children & Adults

Tommy Thornton Seeks His 15 Minutes of Fame And A Bear

For the record, we only used up about 3 minutes, so Tommy’s got a lot of time left. :)

Tommy Thornton is such an outgoing and friendly guy.

…the title of this post is a bit deceiving as Tommy wasn’t seeking the limelight, but just eager to participate in all ASCCA has to offer, like the Web site, too

I first met Tommy during check in. He was the only camper we did not have a photo release for and I went in search of him. Tommy, it turns out, is quite the independant guy. He filled out his own application for attending camp. It is, after all, the adult session. He had just forgotten to sign the photo release and was eager to participate in interviews.

Tommy’s disability hasn’t slowed him down. I watched as he walked all around the pool using floats to steady himself. The pool both helps the campers feel free and more mobile while also requiring themselves to exercise as they walk through the water. The floats he is holding are what he used to do the 50 yard lap of walking. Tommy had a stroke some years ago and the pool is excellent therapy for him.

Meet Tommy in this video. It is 4:19 in length and a 7.5 mb download.

And, for a final on the record moment - if there are bears in our woods, we haven’t seen them, yet. You’ll understand after watching the interview. Tommy, it turns out, is quite a character, too. ;)
