Alabama’s Special Camp for Children & Adults

Accessibility of the ASCCA Web Site

Accessibility is a hallmark of Camp ASCCA. Our camp facilities are a model for other recreation facilities. We want the site to be equally accessible, too.

…Talkr takes the text of websites and turns them into a MP3 file so you may listen to the text…

Two additions to this site are specifically aimed at our visually impaired visitors, but are also useful to other visitors.

The first is Talkr. It takes text from blogs and turns them into a podcast. So, we have added the function to all posts. We used the Talkr Podcast Plugin for Wordpress. Both Talkr and the plugin are two more great - and free - tools that enable us to offer you this site.

Talkr logoSo, look for the link at the bottom of each post that reads: Talkr speaker iconClick to launch pop up and have the text portion read to you. It will launch a pop up window that will play the MP3 file of the text.

Another tool we have added to the blog is the ability to view each post in a high contrast and easily printable form. At the bottom of each post, look for the link that reads Printer Friendly - High Contrast Version. It will open that post in a plain black and white text format that is easier to read. You may also increase the size of the text by using your browser’s view functions. For example, pressing the Control key and the + key will increase the text size of the page you are viewing.

Another aspect we are working on is the ability for those using Macs to view our videos. Right now, we post WMV video files. We are going to be converting all of those files to MPEG format and uploading them to various social media sites like Google Video, YouTube and MySpace. This will take awhile, but look for links to start appearing in posts that will allow you to go see those videos, too.

Finally, please help us by writing with any issues you may be experiencing with the site. We can’t get better if we don’t know about problems and we are counting on you to keep us working to make this site as accessible as possible. Thanks!
