Camp ASCCA/Children’s Harbor Rotary Golf Challenge

Oover the past 13 years the Alexander City Rotary Club has sponsored the Camp ASCCA/Children’s Harbor Rotary Golf Challenge. Each year, businesses and individuals donate time and money to make the tournament a success. Also, due to the generous contributions of the host courses, almost all the proceeds from this event go directly to Camp ASCCA and Children’s Harbor.

…You can’t put a price tag on what this means. Many parents have a problem coming up with the money to send their child to camp. And this can mean the world to those families…

Children’s Harbor is a not-for-profit organization serving children with long-term serious illnesses and their families. Their mission statement is simple: “Strengthening Children and their Families”. Dedicated in 1990, Children’s Harbor has a Lake Martin campus, whose focus is camping and adventure services, and a Family Center in Birmingham where they provide counseling, education, and support services.

The event was held October 29-30 at two courses: Farm Links at Pursell Farms (Sylacauga) and Willow Point (Alexander City). Each course was beautiful and the weather was picture perfect for the two-day golf tournament. Entries to the Rotary Golf Challenge consisted of two-man teams playing a best ball format. The tourney kicked off Sunday morning, with the golfers playing the Farm Links course. Later that evening, participants and their families came together for a social event held at the Willow Point clubhouse. Willow Point also hosted Monday’s golf and activities. The tournament was a great success for everyone involved. Camp ASCCA and Children’s Harbor will receive close to $55,000 each from this year’s event! Over the past 13 years, this tournament has been able to raise over $1 million!

Below is a multimedia presentation I created to thank the Alexander City Rotary Club for their support. If you check it out you’ll hear comments from Camp ASCCA’s John Stephenson and Matt Rickman, as well as a few words from Jim Ray, executive director of Children’s Harbor. There are also lots of pictures from the two-day event on Flickr. The video is 6:02 in length and is an 8.4 mb download.

[...] You may remember my previous blog about the golf tournament, but I wanted to revisit the story and add a personal flavor. While the tournament was being played, Dana Rickman and myself were criss-crossing the fairways and greens looking for photos and video. The courses were beautiful and the golfers were pleased with the amazing weather, 70 degrees and sunny! I happened to get a few shots of the ASCCA staff on Sunday and Dana got a few more on Monday. Click on the picture to go to Flickr, if you want to see more photos. [...]
