Alabama’s Special Camp for Children & Adults

United Way Season

For many not-for-profits around Alabama, it’s the United Way season! This means completing applications for funding, attending many kick-off’s, speaking to businesses and organizations who give to United Way, and most importantly for Camp ASCCA and the people with disabilities we serve, spreading the word about camp!

Camp ASCCA is involved with a number of United Way’s around the state including; Lake Martin Area United Way, the State Combined Campaign, and the “Heart of Alabama” Combined Federal Campaign.

This past week, November 7th, I got the chance to go and speak to a weekly “turn-in” meeting at the United Way of Lee County, another United Way in which we are involved. Each year, this United Way asks that each agency it sponsors partners with another agency to provide breakfast for the meeting and make a short presentation highlighting our agencies.

After enjoying a nice breakfast of biscuits and fruit, Rhonda Trammel with Junior Achievement gave her presentation. Afterwards, I gave a brief update on our camping services for persons with disabilities and showed a short compilation video that highlighted certain aspects of our camp, including camper, parent, volunteer, and staff video interviews.

I must say the video presentation received fantastic reviews that morning. Many volunteers present were thankful to see the real, unstaged, “raw” experiences that many of our campers and staff experience. (Thanks to Robert and our summer interns for making this possible!)

Like I said before, Camp ASCCA is an agency of the United Way of Lee County; which provides assistance to agencies that help children and youth succeed, promote health and independence, assist in times of critical need, and strengthen families and community.
