Last week, 14 Auburn University students, majoring in physical education, made a visit to our ropes course.
Professor Peter Hastie brought the group, and has been bringing his students to Camp ASCCA for several years.
Professor Hastie uses our high rope and low rope courses as a learning experience for his students.
When I asked Professor Hastie how his students benefit from the ropes course, he told me, “Physical education teachers are constantly teaching children and young people new skills. For many, learning these new skills brings with it feelings of excitement, but for many others, fear, concern and lack of confidence. Adventure activities place these prospective teachers into learning situations that allow them to experience the concerns of novice learners, but more importantly, they learn about the climate necessary for success, that is; support, encouragement and praise.”
Camp ASCCA’s ropes course is not only fun but can be used for learning purposes too. This Auburn group is a perfect example of how a group can utilize our facilities in a great way. If any potential weekend group is interested in a fun learning experience that your group will benefit from mentally and physically, think about Camp ASCCA’s ropes course. Professor Hastie goes on to say that, “having a real experience to draw from is invaluable.”
