Staff Recruitment
The Camp ASCCA staff has been on the road traveling to various college campuses looking for prospective summer employees. Its not always easy and its not always a success, but it does spread the good word of Camp ASCCA to new people.
Camp Director Matt Rickman estimates, on average, he has 40% returning staff each summer. With a total summer staff of about 55 people, he’s responsible for bringing in more than 30 individuals. That number doesn’t seem too high, but this summer job isn’t for everyone. Matt says he’s looking for people who are hard working, caring, and have a “service above self” mentality.
We’re always looking for guys! One of the biggest struggles each recruiting season is finding enough male staff. This seems to be a disability services “problem area” in general, as many other Easter Seals camp directors have encountered this situation. However, Matt doesn’t hire every male that puts in an application. The quality of the applicant is a much bigger factor than the basic need to fill a position.
I asked Heather White, Aquatics Director, for her thoughts on the recruiting. Her favorite part of the recruiting season is watching the staff being assembled, piece by piece. Every week or so, Matt will update his program specialists on how many male and female staff he has hired and how many more he needs. She says, “It’s exciting to be able to see the staff come together from the beginning. You meet new people and it’s always interesting to hear how first time staff members found out about Camp ASCCA.”
With about 3 months until the first program staff members arrive, the recruiting and hiring processes are intensifying. Matt is still looking for good employees, so get those applications in the mail. Anyone interested in applying for a summer position can download the form here or from the Camp ASCCA homepage.
