Over the weekend, Feb. 9-11, Camp ASCCA was pleased to welcome Cullman High School Baseball. 19 varsity baseball players and 4 coaches made the trip from North Alabama for a team building weekend.
The team arrived Friday night and ate a late dinner. Following the meal, the team took their bags to the cabins. That night we played a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. The baseball coaches claimed victory in the tournament after going undefeated all night.
Saturday morning began with breakfast and shortly afterwards the team met in the gym to begin the day’s activities. First on the agenda were ice-breaker games. These games allowed Nathan and I to get to know the team a little better, they also served as a warm-up for the chilly 40-degree weather. At about 9:45 a.m. we split the team into two groups and hit the ropes course for team building excercises.
The group experienced almost every aspect of our challenge course. They worked together to complete different activities such as: the Spider’s Web, Mohawk Walk, The Log, Nitro’s Crossing, and The Wall. Just before lunch we took a brief walking tour of the amphitheatre and lakefront area.
The team had a brief meeting after lunch and then it was off to the Roswell-Levy Accessible Climbing Tower. Nathan explained how we use the tower in the summer and how it is accessible to virtually every camper that comes through the gates. Each member of the team, including coaches, was afforded the opportunity to climb the tower and ride the zipline. It was a great way to relax and have fun for a few hours.
Before dinner, the team took advantage of our ball field to go over game situations and field a few groundballs and pop-ups. After dinner, it was back to the pavilion for indoor whiffle ball. This game turned out to be quite competitive and after two close games, a third game was required to determine the overall winner for the night.
Hosting the Cullman Baseball team was a special event for Nathan and me, as we are both from Cullman, and played two years for the current head coach, Bryan Bowen. The team has been very successful in recent years, becoming one of the perennial contenders for the 5A State Baseball Championship. We wish them the best of luck this season and look forward to seeing future teams visit Camp ASCCA.
