GPS Treasure Hunt :: Lee-Scott Academy Goes Geocaching at Camp ASCCA

Geocaching is actually all the rage these days.

As part of their weekend trip to ASCCA, Lee-Scott Academy’s Sixth Grade class embarked on a geocache treasure hunt.

Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for GPS users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache. (Source)

Geocaching is pronounced: geo-cash-ing. It involves an understanding of longitude, latitude and the use of a compass and map (or directions / coordinates). And, you use a GPS device.

yellow gpsA GPS unit is an electronic device that can determine your approximate location (within around 6-20 feet) on the planet. Coordinates are normally given in Longitude and Latitude. You can use the unit to navigate from your current location to another location. Some units have their own maps, built-in electronic compasses, voice navigation, depending on the complexity of the device. (Source)

By the way … for those new to our site, Camp ASCCA’s videos tend to be of the cinema verite variety. OK, try not to giggle at that description.  Essentially, this means that our videos are “a technique of documentary filmmaking in which the camera records actual persons and events without directorial control.” (Source)So, what does that mean? Well, we just let the video tell the story. So, follow along as this group sets out to trek across the 260+ acres of Camp ASCCA. Um, they didn’t walk over all of the 260+ acres, but certainly covered dozens of them.

Have the students check out this GPS Riddle game too. It combines math and trivia skills and delivers a geography lesson as well.
