Alabama’s Special Camp for Children & Adults

Seale Harris Family Weekend

The first visit to a new place can be intimidating. New people, new surroundings, and new ways of doing things can be overwhelming, especially to young children. Thats why Camp ASCCA and Seale Harris have Family Weekends.

…Seale Harris weekends give families a chance to experience the camp lifestyle together…

The Seale Harris weekends are a great opportunity for prospective campers and their parents to experience our camp atmosphere. Many of the participants are first time visitors to Camp ASCCA. Spending a couple of nights in the cabins, eating in the dining hall, and going through a program rotation give the families a chance to see what their child will be involved in during the week-long summer sessions.

Over the weekend of March 23-25, Camp ASCCA hosted several families from across the state who were looking to try-out the camp lifestyle. Seale Harris does an outstanding job of mixing fun with diabetic education. Each counselor has diabetes and most have been summer campers in the past. This allows them to relate on a personal level to the kids.

The youth in attendance ranged from 4 to 13 years old. The groups were broken down into age ranges which allowed for a more balanced program schedule. Besides outdoor activities, there were also opportunities to learn a thing or two. While the children were riding the horse, climbing the treehouse, and playing various games in the gym, their parents were going through educational sessions.

To me, the knowledge a parent can gain from these meetings is invaluable. Many parents find little tips and tricks in these meetings that help them accomodate their child’s needs. Some of the educational sessions are led by individuals who have been living with diabetes their whole life. They can relate a few personal experiences to the parents, and maybe it sparks an new idea in their minds.

It was a great weekend for everyone and we look forward to our Camp Seale Harris summer camps that begin at the end of May. Special thanks to Sara Latimer for the pictures.
