Past ASCCA Counselor Lands Cool Internship

For a summer at Camp ASCCA, Kristen Taffaro worked with campers and other staff having fun with children and adults with disabilities.  They were having fun, to be sure, but - they were also learning.  That’s important, because it happens every day at ASCCA.  And, the experiences change lives. It helped direct Kristen toward future studies in college.

…Kristen is one of many former ASCCA counselors to use their experience at ASCCA to further their career elsewhere … this makes us happy

Kristen writes, “I got into a great internship at a school in upstate New York called The Center for Discovery.” The Center for Discovery has adult and pediatric programs and is quite a terrific program.

The Adult Services Program at the Center for Discovery provides quality caring and support designed to help each individual maximize his or her full potential. Dedicated and values driven staff, in conjunction with integrated clinic and health care services, provide rich and rewarding home lives for nearly 100 adults ranging in age from 21 to 90.

Reading that description, and also the one for their pediatric programs, makes me think this is a program very similar to Camp ASCCA’s.

The Center for Discovery offers programs to children ages 3-21 diagnosed with significant disabilities including autism, pervasive developmental disorders, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, neurological impairments and many other low incidence and syndromes. All of our students have mild to severe cognitive delays and most have significant language and social impairments. Approximately 40% of the children are ambulatory and the remaining are non-ambulatory.

Kristen - Former CounselorKristen credits Camp ASCCA for helping her land the internship. She writes, “I feel like a lot of why I was accepted is because of working at Camp ASCCA. The clinical training director was really impressed. This internship is such a dream come true!”

We’re very happy for Kristen and all the other former counselors and program staff that use Camp ASCCA as a learning experience to launch or further their careers. ASCCA is often amazed at the scope of activity our former staff are engaged in today. We have approximately 1,500+ former counselors and program staff. Many are now working in therapeutic recreation and numerous medical, educational and other careers all across the country.
