University of North Alabama Students Bring Smiles to Rehobeth and Ashford Campers

Camp ASCCA and college therapeutic recreation programs unite this summer to provide unique experiences for public school special education students.

…UNA students gain valuable experience working with faculty to serve campers with mental disabilities…

This week at Camp ASCCA, a group of students from The University of North Alabama are working and playing with kids from the Rehobeth School, Ashford Elementary, and Ashford High School.
The UNA students see this week as an opportunity to learn more about themselves and their intended career path through connecting with and assisting the campers. UNA student Casey Poirier intends to “gain an appreciation for the things that we take for granted.”

Also this week, the students are looking forward to getting to know the other students and faculty that came from UNA, including the new UNA Men’s Basketball Coach, Bobby Champagne. Coach Champagne takes time off the basketball court to interact with the UNA students and the campers in this interactive learning environment.

Coach Champagne is shown in this video making his way up the “Dangling Duo.” “It required a lot more mental ability than physical, much different from basketball,” he said.
