Diabetes Education is Interactive!

Diabetes Education is one of the most important parts of Camp Seale Harris. The information campers learn at this session is very important for living a healthy life with diabetes.

She feels it is important for the sessions to be interactive. The campers gain a lot more from the program if they are learning hands on..

This year Adrianne Veres will conduct the diabetes education sessions at Camp Seale Harris. Adrianne has been involved with Camp Seale Harris since 1996. She feels it is important for the sessions to be interactive. She believes campers gain a lot more from the program if they are interacting and learning hands on.

This hands on approach was used yesterday during the first diabetes education session for this week. The session began with a demonstration of what normal blood, 250 blood sugar, and 500 blood sugar look like when pumping through a vein. This was shown using fake blood mixtures and a straw to act as the vein. The fake blood showed how difficult it was for the 250 and the 500 levels to move through the vein.

Then the campers experienced what it feels like to check blood sugar when hypoglycemic. This was done by spinning in circles and then stopping to check blood sugar. This is to simulate the woozy feeling that is felt when a person is hypoglycemic.

The session ended with a group of campers trying to make a bowl of cereal while blindfolded. This is important because blindness is a possible complication of having constant high blood sugar.
