This Summer Is a New Experience for Counselor Edric Byrd!

University of Alabama student Edric Byrd chose to work at Camp ASCCA this summer in hopes of having a challenging and rewarding experience.  He hadn’t worked with people with disabilities much before, but he says he felt like he knew what to expect and that he could handle it.

…he’s enjoying being a counselor so much, in fact, that he is considering taking on a  similar career…

His mother, however, wasn’t so sure Edric would be able to stick it out for the entire three months.  He’s been here for about one month, and he feels he’s proven her wrong.  He’s enjoying being a counselor so much, in fact, that he is considering taking on a similar career!

Edric is excellent at relating to the campers and helping them have a wonderful time!  He can often be found playing basketball or cracking jokes with them.  To communicate with one of his campers this week, Edric took the time to learn enough sign language in what he calls a two-hour “crash course.”  He loves working with the adult campers at Dadeville, but he says he has a soft-spot for kids and is ready for sessions at the main campus.

Edric stopped playing putt-putt for a few minutes this morning to tell us about his summer thus far.  Watch the video below to hear what he has to say!
