Wheelchair Hockey Comes to Camp ASCCA

One of the activities used at Camp ASCCA for therapeutic recreation is Sports and Games, and it is a favorite of many campers. They can participate in a wide variety of activities such as golf, tennis, dodgeball and basketball.

…It is a lot of fun and it is my favorite activity to run at camp

This year Corey Webb, program staff member for sports and games, introduced wheelchair hockey to Camp ASCCA. The campers from Camp MDA who are at Camp ASCCA this week tried it out for the first time today and it was a huge success.

Corey thought of the idea at another Easter Seals camp she was working at in California. The camp had hockey sticks and she thought it would be a fun thing for the campers to play.

She says that it is a sport that can be played by both campers who use wheelchairs and campers that do not. Campers with wheelchairs can hold the stick and have someone push them or tape the stick to their chair and push themselves. They can also play with campers who are not in wheelchairs, which is fun for everyone!

Corey is excited about teaching Camp ASCCA campers next week how to play hockey; it is not a typical sport one thinks of when they think of camp. Corey said hockey “is a lot of fun and it is my favorite activity to run at camp.”

You can see footage of MDA campers playing wheelchair hockey and Corey Webb on this video!
