Fishing attracted quite a crowd yesterday during free choice, so I made a trip down to the pond so see what was causing all the hype. When I arrived, twelve fish had already been caught, and campers caught two more before I left!
…campers like fishing because they get to interact with the animals they catch…
Despite the hot sun, everyone was really enjoying themselves and anxiously watching their poles. Fish must really like hotdogs, because bits of wieners made great bait!
Andrew Loftin took a break from baiting hooks and helping reel in fish to tell me a little about how fishing as a camp activity works. He says the campers like fishing because they get to interact with the animals they catch. The Nature Staff keeps things interesting by having campers kiss the fish before returning them to the pond!
The types of fish living in the ASCCA are crappie, bream, bass and catfish. Occasionally campers catch a turtle, but nobody kisses those! In the video below, see some campers show off their fish and hear Andrew explain his program in more detail.
