The Sickle Cell campers were in for a special treat on Monday when professional artist Freida Hall came to visit! As part of a project to promote Sickle Cell awareness in communities, a calendar will be published at the end of the year featuring artwork by children with Sickle Cell Anemia.
…the campers gave their work a title and told how their art describes living with Sickle Cell…
Ms. Hall was chosen as the art therapist to talk to and instruct our campers. She explained to them that art can be used to express feelings that might be hard to talk about, and she showed them some artwork created by her son, Peter, who also has Sickle Cell.
After they finished their drawings, the campers gave their work a title and told how their art describes living with Sickle Cell. Some of them expressed the unfairness of being one of few people with the painful disease, while others drew themselves having fun and living happily despite the disease.
Ms. Hall teaches Advanced Placement Studio Art, and her son is also a professional artist. She taught him to use art to cope with Sickle Cell Anemia as a child, and she believes more art therapy programs should be in existence. Meet Ms. Hall and learn a little more about her profession and her experience with Sickle Cell Anemia.
