Terrika Johnson is spending a week at camp with our Sickle Cell Campers. This is her second year to come to camp and she absolutely loves it.
…She made a scrapbook of last years camp so they could remember at the fun times they had…
Terrika is a Pediatric Sickle Cell Social Worker so she mainly interacts with the sickle cell campers when they are at the doctor or in the hospital, so she enjoys watching the children having fun at camp. She told me it makes the families feel better knowing the children have a familiar face when they come to camp.
Terrika told me the campers are always talking about camp while they are sick in the hospital and it helps them get through their stays. She even made a scrapbook of last years camp so they could look at all the pictures and remember the fun times they had while they are visiting the doctor or staying in the hospital.
She said camp is important because the campers can interact with other children who have Sickle Cell. Camp also teaches them to not let Sickle Cell keep them from doing what they want to do. She told me the campers favorite activities are tubing and swimming.
Sickle Cell Camp is about to come to an end but it was a fun week and we hope to see everyone back next year, including Terrika!
