Camp ASCCA Gives Kyle Pease an A+

More than a few times, Camp ASCCA has served as a classroom for its employees. In fact, at least six of our summer staff members are considered interns and are receiving school credit for their work this summer, while many more are just looking for hands-on experience in their field of study. Last week, however, Camp ASCCA hosted a college student in a rather unusual position–as a camper!

Kyle Pease of Atlanta, GA is currently majoring in Sports Management at Kennesaw State University and plans to graduate in the fall of 2008. Kyle also has cerebral palsy. During a conference, ASCCA’s Camp Director Matt Rickman met Dr. John David Johnson, one of Kyle’s professors, and Dr. Johnson suggested that Kyle visit Camp ASCCA to study some adaptive sports.

Kyle observed and took an interest in much of Camp ASCCA’s equipment, from supportive seats to oversized soccer balls. While at camp, he also text messaged his professor to update him on what he was seeing. Kyle says that after spending a week at Camp ASCCA, he would like to look into Therapeutic Recreation, but his real dream is to be a motivational speaker and start his own company.

If that’s the case, Kyle certainly gained experience in speaking and motivating as well. His positive attitude and sense of humor won the hearts of all of our staff, and he took home the Camper of the Week award for session five. Besides learning about adaptive sports, Kyle says he also grew as a person, so hopefully Camp ASCCA will give him some subject matter for his future speeches.

The ASCCA Staff is always saying that the campers put our problems into perspective, but we never expect the campers to gain that same perspective as well. Kyle Pease, however, told one staff member that after spending a week here, even his trials and barriers seem small. Sports, Kyle says, have always been a part of his life, and that’s what brought him to Camp ASCCA. Now that he’s been here, whether he realizes it or not, he’ll always be a part of our lives, too!
