This summer, everyone at Camp ASCCA has seen firsthand how painful living with Sickle Cell Anemia can be. Besides hosting the annual Sickle Cell Camp for the Sickle Cell Foundation, one of Camp ASCCA’s own staff members, Alisha Smith, was hospitalized due to the disease. That’s why when Selena Webster-Bass, MPH, came to camp with a project to spread the word about Sickle Cell, Whitney and I sat in on her session and were eager to interview her afterwards!

Selena Webster-Bass is the Manager of Multicultural Initiatives for Be Sickle Smart, which is sponsored by Novartis pharmaceuticals. Be Sickle Smart is a grass-roots effort to educate communities on the effects that Sickle Cell has on its patients and their families, as well as the dangers of iron overload due to some treatments.
At Camp ASCCA, she and artist Freida Hall held an art session in which the campers expressed what it’s like to live with Sickle Cell. Their artwork, along with the artwork of other children with Sickle Cell, will provide the design for a calendar titled “Inspirations” which will be distributed to increase Sickle Cell awareness.
