A recent weekend here at Camp ASCCA brought together 5
different groups, from different parts of the state, for a fun and educational time. The Visionary Guild was the first to arrive on Thursday for Lunch. The Visionary Guild is a group of artists with mental disabilities from across the state. They were here for a weekend full of workshops and artistic experiences with some great local artists. The focus for this retreat was poetry and folk art. They stayed in the Lions Lodge and used the Arts & Crafts building for their folk art workshop. They had a great time and were sad to leave on Saturday after lunch.
…sometimes the number of groups that visit Camp ASCCA even surprises us…
Flint Hill Men with Vision was the next group to arrive. They started coming in right after lunch on Friday. This was a religious retreat for both men and women from all over the southeast. They stayed in the Mark Roberts Lodge and the Boys Cabins and used the Dunn Environmental Center for their meetings. They were very pleased with how their retreat went and look forward to coming back next year.
Partlow arrived just before dinner on Friday. They are a group of adults with mental and physical disabilities. This was their fall retreat and they all participated in some great activities. After dinner Friday night, they had a bonfire and roasted marshmallows before they retired to Davis Lodge for a good night’s sleep. On Saturday after a great breakfast in the cafeteria, they headed
down to the zip-line for a little flying fun and then headed over to the Dunn Center for a nature scavenger hunt. After lunch and a short rest period, the campers put on their cowboy boots and ten-gallon hats for a great time out in the horseback ridding arena.
The campers got to meet Velma (one of our therapeutic riding horses) up-close and personal, then take her for a spin around the ring. This was also Velma’s last group of the summer before she and Slick went home for their winter break. After horseback ridding, the campers got to go fishing at our stocked pond. They had a great time mastering their fishing skills with Lacee before heading back to camp for dinner and a dance. Sunday morning, found Partlow competing against each other in a bocce tournament, followed by a great time painting in arts and crafts.
The Auburn University Singers arrived around the same time as Partlow on Friday and stayed in the Girls Cabins. They are a group of University students that have traveled all over the country entertaining people with their song and dance routines. Their time here at Camp ASCCA was spent learning their fall show and we loved having them here. After a weekend of hard work they put on a performance for parents and invited guests in the Cafeteria on Sunday afternoon. I can see why tickets for their performances go so quickly, they were terrific!
The last group to visit Camp ASCCA that weekend was the Lake Martin Lakewatch group. They came for Sunday afternoon to have a business meeting on the deck overlooking the lake. The weather was perfect for their outside meeting to discuss several issues pertaining to Lake Martin and the Lakewatch group itself.
Wow, what a full weekend, but we loved having every single group here! And they seemed to all enjoy the time they spent here at camp, too.
