Alabama’s Special Camp for Children & Adults

Happy Birthday Camp ASCCA

33years ago, Camp ASCCA started to take shape. Construction began on Lake Martin. A remarkable group of volunteers rode a pontoon boat up to the northern edge of Lake Martin and scoped out the land. It was at that time that they decided, “We’re going to build a camp. Not just any camp. The biggest camp. More importantly, the best camp in the world, and all for people with disabilities.”

Camp ASCCA is the world’s largest & best camp of its kind and you made it that way. Thanks!

OK, the dates are actually a bit fuzzy. But, we do know this much. About this time in 1975, Camp ASCCA’s construction began. One year later, the first group of campers attended ASCCA. So, today’s our birthday! :o)

One year later, we had our first groups of campers. And this is our first staff, too! Look at ‘em. Aren’t they great.

That group was quite remarkable. They went on to amazing careers. Some were teachers, others were doctors. One is even a superintendent of education. Regardless, they were (and are) exceptional people - like all of our counselors.

We hope you’ll come see us at Camp ASCCA very soon. We’re already having a great summer!

By the way, that totem pole? It is still there today! Pretty cool, huh. ;o)

Camp ASCCA has a new site! ASCCA Friends. It is our own personal social media network. Also, did you know that Camp ASCCA is in Facebook? If you are too, please go on over and “Friend” Camp ASCCA and join the Camp ASCCA Facebook group, too.
