Alabama’s Special Camp for Children & Adults

Dale :: A Seale Harris Counselor

L

ast week I met with a counselor for Camp Seale Harris. Dale has been coming to Camp ASCCA through Camp Seale Harris for about 13 or 14 years. He has been a camper, a CIT (counselor in training) and now a counselor.

He said he enjoys coming to camp. It has helped him learn to live with his diabetes.

He wants to give to the children that come to camp, the same thing that he has always gotten out of camp. Dale said that at camp children are given the opportunity to learn about how to handle their diabetes in various situations. Many children in the junior camp have had little experience regulating their blood sugar, but Camp Seale Harris teaches these young children how to do that.

Dale wants to teach these children how to stay healthy and still be active like other children. He knows what it is like to live in a world that does not have to constantly worry about what they eat. He uses this knowledge to help his campers understand they need be open about their diabetes.

During his years as a camper with Seale Harris he learned how to cope with being different from other children at school. Camp was a place Dale could come to every year where everyone was experiencing a lot of the same things as him.

Dale said he has made a lot of great friendships at camp. Through the different activities and educational moments provided at camp, Dale learned to be adventurous and cautious of his diabetes in his daily life.
