Last week, Camp APAC came to Camp ASCCA. APAC is Alabama’s Pre/Post Adoption
Connection. The summer camp gives adopted children, foster children, and their siblings a chance to interact with each other, and enjoy traditional camp activities like canoeing, tubing, swimming and climbing.
Alongside the traditional activities, campers participate in debriefings and special
presentations. This year’s campers got to listen to Cedric Riley, an adopted student from Ohio.
This year was Jaya’s first summer at APAC. She previously attended camps, but not a camp especially for adoptees. Jaya was adopted at age nine, and she feels that camp gives her the opportunity to meet other kids who have similar experiences. Camp is a place where she doesn’t have to explain herself or her story. She enjoyed all of the activities, and she said that listening to speakers like Cedric Riley is great because she can relate to his stories.
Jem, a therapist for APAC, has been attending Camp APAC for three summers. All APAC staff attend camp, and Jem is appreciative of the opportunity to meet kids and their families. She believes that camp gives kids a sense of belonging. Being at camp also introduces her to new situations and experiences that will help her relate to families and children she speaks with as a therapist.
