Alabama’s Special Camp for Children & Adults

Sibling Counselors for MDA

We have a lot going on at Camp ASCCA this week! Right now we are hosting the MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) camp and training our ASCCA counselors.

During sports and games this morning I learned that three of the MDA counselors are siblings and have been coming to camp for many years. The three are Jennifer, Andy and Alex from Birmingham, Ala. area.

Jennifer has been a counselor for MDA camp for 10 years, Andy for six and Alex for three. They found out about camp from their high school and they just keep coming back. When at camp they make sure everything is about the campers. Making sure the camper is having a great time is their priority.

Jennifer received her bachelors degree from Springhill College and her masters degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Andy is taking classes at UAB, preparing to take the MCAT in the spring for medical school. Alex will be a senior in high school this fall, and loves to play soccer.

The three of them work together very efficiently. I could tell they are counselors for MDA because they truly care about the campers and showing them the time of the camper’s lives. They realize that without sincere counselors, like themselves, there would be no camp and no place for these children to have these amazing experiences.

Camp is something that they all enjoy and hold special to themselves. As long as it is possible they say they will continue to come to camp.
