Training and a Returning Counselor
Today I caught up with one of our returning counselors, Katie Dougherty. Katie is one of our
out of state counselor, from Florida. Her major at Florida State University is special education. Katie will graduate in 2010 with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in special education with a certificate in developmental disabilities, specialization in Autism and leadership studies. She said her experiences at Camp ASCCA have played a major roll in her academic studies and hopes to apply many more.
All counselors are being trained in how to complete transfers to and from wheelchairs for all activities. They are using each other as test subjects. Even the counselors who are returning for their second plus year are completing the training. Like Katie said, they are learning and comprehending the material better. As an added bonus for the new staff the veterans are able to help new staff learn better and more efficiently.
While in training the counselors are putting themselves in the place of the campers. They are learning how to lead and be led and to rely on the help of others.

Today we had a speaker from United Cerebral Palsy who taught the counselors about the different types of Cerebral Palsy and the affects of it on the body. They counselors were given different tools that allowed them to feel and see life as someone who has Cerebral Palsy. The activities became more difficult than the counselors thought, but they realized exactly what the speaker wanted them to learn.
The counselors are doing a great job, and they can’t wait for the campers to arrive next week!
