Learning to transfer safely
Counselors learned to transfer campers on Monday during Orientation Week. The counselors
took some time to learn how to transfer each other into and out of beds and bathrooms. The training was given by ASCCA Head Counselors, Nathan McNair and Amber Cotney, and the unit leaders. They demonstrated the different types of transfers, and then the counselors split into groups to practice and learn the techniques.
While practicing in the bedrooms, staff practiced two-man transfers into and out of the bed. Staff learned the importance of always communicating with the camper during a
transfer. This way, the camper is always comfortable, and no one will get hurt. Each counselor had the chance to practice being at the head of the camper and at the camper’s leg, as well as posing as a camper.
In the bathrooms, counselors practiced both two-man and pivot transfers. Pivot transfers are mainly used for male campers into the bathrooms, and they require only one staff member. The male staff practiced in a
very small bathroom in order to prepare themselves for difficult situations.
The practice allowed staff to test their limits, apply their skills, and see how much they can lift. Surprisingly, many of the staff members could lift much more than expected. The training also taught staff to communicate with each other. This way, counselors can see if their partner is struggling or if something doesn’t feel right.
In an interview, Evan Davis and Sean Tipton discuss the importance of practicing transfers before campers arrive. Evan, a second-year counselors, said that it is good to refresh your mind and touch up your skills. Sean, a new counselor, said that it is good to be prepared for tough situations and to learn by doing, instead of just talking about how to do it.
