Alabama’s Special Camp for Children & Adults

Unit leader returns for 4th summer

Monica Whittington has been a big part of Camp ASCCA. Her first two years on staff were spent as the Music and Arts ‘n Crafts Director. This year is Monica’s second year as a unit leader.

Monica found out about camp thanks to her friend and fellow staff member Abbey Love. After hearing all of Abbey’s stories, Monica decided to take an adventure and move to the south!

Monica is a student at the University of Colorado majoring in Speech Therapy. She said that before she came to Camp ASCCA, she did not really know what she wanted to do; our campers inspried her career selection.

Although she misses being the Music and Arts ‘n Crafts Director, Monica is enjoying the role of unit leader. Unit leaders supervise the cabins and assist the counselors and program staff with their duties. Alongside her normal position, Monica often makes guest appearances for camper entertainment. She often sings and plays her guitar for the campers during cabin time and evening programs.

Keep an eye out for Monica while she’s hanging with the campers or with a guitar in her hand!

In her interview, Monica shares some interesting facts about herself, her favorite memories, and she describes the relationship that forms between campers and staff members. Check it out here:
