Shanae and Josh before Prom
Minutes before last week’s prom I stopped to ask Shanae and Josh a few questions their thoughts on camp.
It did not take long before I realized these two, like many of the campers last week, call
Camp ASCCA home. They come for one week out of the year and its home away from home.
Josh told me that camp is like “one big family,” and Shanae said, “we all have disabilities, but we don’t see them….ASCCA is wheelchair blind.”
They both agree that it’s different at camp. Camp to some is their real world. This is home, as our prom theme stated last week. This past week our campers reminded the staff constantly just how much they loved camp and what this week means to them.
Shanae and Josh were two of those campers. Camp ASCCA is not just a summer camp, it’s home to hundreds of people all over the world!
Shanae told me that the relationships she has developed from camp have helped her to realize she is not alone. She has developed relationships with other campers, counselors and other full time staff. Shanae and Josh actually met online through Facebook and our own ASCCA Friends! There friendship continued to grow at camp, and now they are close friends!
Josh told me the same. He said the reason he keeps coming back to camp is because of the friendship that he makes each year. Josh said it’s “really all about the friendship and camaraderie that we enjoy every year.”
