Alabama’s Special Camp for Children & Adults

A Third Time Camper :: Akiera

While visiting the splash pad yesterday I saw one girl who was having a blast playing in the ring of water spouts! She was chopping, hopping on, jumping through and laughing at all the fun she was having at our newest attraction.

The girl, Akiera, has been to Camp ASCCA for the sickle cell camp for three years now and says she comes because it is fun!

Akiera said many things that make camp fun. Those things include the activities, her friends and her counselors. She said her counselors are fun because they treat her right and help her stay healthy and hydrated!

She said it was too tough to try to pick a favorite activity, but horseback was pretty high on her list of things to do this week. She did say she was looking forward to going to the dance this Thursday.

The group with sickle cell teaches the campers about sickle cell and how to prevent the attacks. Yesterday they also had an artist come into their groups during arts and crafts to show the campers an easy way to be creative.

Akiera said that camp has helped her learn more about what she needs to do to stay healthy and prevent an attack from her sickle cells.
