Prom 2008 :: “We are miracles and we are not alone”
Everyone knows that the highlight of Teen Week is the Prom. This year’s Prom theme was “This is Home,” inspired by the song by Switchfoot.
Throughout the week, Camp ASCCA’s grounds were sprinkled with signs campaigning the election of campers to Prom King and Queen. Most campers created “Vote for Me” signs, while others took a more creative approach. One camper even handed popsicles and lollipops advertising his campaign!!
For most campers, Thursday couldn’t get here soon enough. Meals were filled with love notes from campers asking others to be their dates.
Thursday started off with activities, but as soon as rest period was over, the Prom prep began. Our prom decorations were donated by a local high school, and a local church group spent the entire afternoon transforming our dining hall into a dance floor. Staff members’ moms, friends and siblings came to camp to help campers primp for the dance.
After everyone was ready, photos began. Campers got to choose someone to be in their real prom photo. At the end of the dance, each
camper went home with their own frame.
The prom meal was even special. The meal started off with a tearful blessing and song from camper Zach Woolley and unit leader, Monica Whittington. Campers got to dine on chicken cordon bleu while sitting at long decorated tables. The meal ended with an awards ceremony that recognized some of the camper’s achievements.
Then, it was time to boogey down! Campers and counselors alike were moving and grooving to popular dance songs.
When it was time for the announcement of Prom King and Queen, last year’s Royalty, Shanae Heard and Zach Woolley, moved onto the dance floor. Cheers erupted as Matt Rickman annouced that CC Perry and Ashley Moulin were our new King and Queen. CC and Ashley’s campaigning definitely paid off! The Prom ended with their dance to “This is Home.”
By the time the slideshow was over and the last teary goodbye was said, it was certainly obvious that Camp ASCCA is HOME to so many of our Teen Week campers.
Prom means so much to everyone, and our theme says it all: “we are miracles and we are not alone…this is home,” as Switchfoot says.
