Allison Wetherbee Speaks to Anniston Kiwanis

Continuing her blitz of the state, talking about Camp ASCCA, Allison Wetherbee visited the Anniston Kiwanis club, recently.

An excerpt from a story in the Anniston Star, is below:

Allison Wetherbee steers her electric wheelchair with her shoulder. With no arms or legs, she’s been using a chair since she was 8.

She was at the Wednesday noon Kiwanis club meeting at the Anniston Country club to share her story and the story of the camp for people with disabilities.

Her life parallels that of the camp, Camp Alabama Special Camp for Children and Adults. She began going when she was 7, in 1978, two years after the camp opened. She kept going year-round until she was 17, she said.

It was an alternative to a Girl Scout camp as a Brownie, she said. Her parents searched for a camp before finding Camp ASCCA, which is the largest camp of its kind in the world, she said. (Click image to open a copy of the story.)

Allison hasn’t even been back at camp for a year, yet she’s tearing up the roadways and will likely visit 100 or more organizations before the year is done. Write to Allison and invite her to visit your organization, too.

    Hi Everybody! :-)

I may not make it to 100! But as of right now, I’ve had the pleasure of representing Camp ASCCA at clubs and organizations 54 times this year! Plus, I have 11 more presentations scheduled in the next couple of months! Who knows, I may reach 100 after all!!!!!!

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

    Allison
