U
nless the horse is the famous Honey!
Honey, one of Camp ASCCA’s Therapeutic Riding horses, has recently retired from giving pony rides. She has faithfully performed her duties at camp for over 10 years and has touched the lives of many campers along the way. There are many campers each week that ask about horseback riding as soon as they get out of their cars at check-in on Sunday afternoon, and it never fails that some of them ask for Honey specifically.
She has left a permanent mark on the campers who visit thanks to her gentle nature and love of peppermint candies. She has introduced many first-time campers to horseback riding, many of whom never get a chance to be around horses any place else than camp. It never fails to move me every time someone rides for the first time. The moment the fear of this giant animal turns to awe and wonder over being free of whatever physical limitations the camper might have is priceless. Also when a child or adult connects to a horse mentally and finds a bond that they fail to have with their fellow humans is monumental and humbling. Honey has had thousands of these moments over her time here at camp and has touched the lives of countl
ess campers and will be greatly missed.
Honey has retired to a fantastic farm where she will be someone’s pet and have all the grass, hay, and peppermint candies she can eat. Although she misses the campers, she loves her new home and her new best friend.
Velma, a horse that worked for us last summer, has stepped into Honey’s role at camp and I’m sure is going to do a fabulous job as our new permanent therapy horse although she has big hooves to fill.
