Zac and Justin :: A Friendship That Started at Camp

Justin Strickland loves to tell people about Camp ASCCA and why it’s so great. In fact, he says he believes it is his calling to let people know about the place where he first felt at home and that there was a purpose for him in this world. In his many speeches about Camp ASCCA to civic organizations and people who might take an interest, he credits the counselors with being the “lifeline” of camp, and repeatedly says that everyone who works here is “a gift from God.” Still, there is one special relationship Justin has found at Camp ASCCA that has nothing to do with the staff.

…they became fast friends, sharing a love for DragonBallZ, Harry Potter, and most of all Star Wars..

Justin met his best friend, Zac, during his first visit to Camp ASCCA seven years ago. Zac had already been coming to camp for two years, and the two guys were matched with the same counselor. They became fast friends that week, sharing a love for DragonBallZ, Harry Potter, and most of all, Star Wars.

Justin and Zac keep in touch throughout the year, but the only time they see each other is at camp. Neither of them is shy about expressing the importance of their friendship in their lives or the comfort of knowing someone with such a similar lifestyle. This year, the guys were lucky enough to live in the same cabin, Crow, and to be in the same activity group. There really isn’t much they don’t do together at Camp ASCCA!

Justin’s and Zac’s sarcasm and wit always make them fun to be around, and their sincere gratitude and adoration for Camp ASCCA frequently bring tears to the staff’s eyes, especially the girl counselors. Let Zac and Justin tell you their story for themselves in the video below. You’ll be laughing, crying, or both before you’re finished watching!

Camp ASCCA’s Red Hot!

Teen Week at Camp ASCCA is all about themes and craziness.  We’ll be having a “Never Alone” themed prom, inspired by one of our staff’s favorite songs, themed cabin parties, and daily color and clothing themes.  Today, we got a sizzling start to the week with Red and Crazy Hat Day!

we got a sizzling start to the week with Red and Crazy Hat Day…

Our Alabama fans are especially loving this theme–hats and shirts reading “Roll Tide” are all over the place!  There are also blinking hats, hats with crazy hair, and one girl killed two birds with one stone in a red Santa hat!

Each cabin earns points for their daily participation this week, but it’s hard to tell at this point which cabin is the most dressed up!  Get a look at our red hot campers on the way to breakfast in the video below!

Jane Perry :: One of ASCCA’s Biggest Fans!

Camp ASCCA’s staff members are always trying to spread the word about camp and get more and more people to become campers. What we’ve learned is that our campers themselves, and their parents, are the best at convincing others to pay us a visit. One lady, Jane Perry, has really gone the extra mile to get her friends to camp.

…Jane knows how important a session at Camp ASCCA is to our campers…

Jane’s son, CC, has been coming to camp for several years, and Jane says he would live here if it was possible! However, Jane wasn’t bringing one of her children to camp yesterday. She was giving her friend, Alicia Finley, a ride to camp since Alicia’s mom couldn’t make the trip. Jane knows how important a session at Camp ASCCA is to our campers, and she didn’t want Alicia to miss it!

Jane has what she calls “insider’s knowledge” about Camp ASCCA. A few years ago, CC had had extensive medical treatment shortly before camp. Jane and some other family members got to be CIT’s for the week that he was here, and she says she now further appreciates all that our staff does.

While helping Alicia move in, Jane was already offering to bring another camp friend back for Encore week! You can meet this generous lady and hear about why she loves Camp ASCCA so much in the video below!

Meet Dad Wendell Irons

Like so many ASCCA dads, Wendell Irons has been bringing his son, Randy, to camp for at least ten years.  Why? Simply because he knows how much Randy loves it!

…Wendell wants to make sure Randy never misses a summer of Camp ASCCA fun…

Wendell wants to make sure Randy never misses a summer of Camp ASCCA fun, so he faithfully drops him off and picks him up at camp for one week every year.  He says Randy is exhausted from all the activities at the end of the week, but he is still never ready to leave on Friday morning!

Randy seems to have an enthusiasm about everything he does–his wheelchair is plastered with University of Alabama stickers, and his face lights up when asked about Camp ASCCA.  He must have inherited that enthusiasm from his dad, as you can see in Wendell’s energetic and smiling answers in his interview below!

Camp ASCCA’s First Ever Independent Film Festival

Last Wednesday, our program staff introduced a brand new evening program–the first ever Camp ASCCA Independent Film Festival!

…we had our premiere in the Dunn Center on Wednesday night, complete with popcorn and lemonade…

During Monday and Tuesday’s free choice activities, each cabin created a movie for the festival. Counselors filmed and directed their camper “actors,” and Heather White produced each film. We then had our premiere in the Dunn Center on Wednesday night, complete with popcorn and lemonade!

Movies included an Aretha Franklin-themed dance party, a tea party, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, a music video, a Camp ASCCA version of MTV’s True Life reality series, Captain Planet Saves Camp ASCCA, a wildlife at Camp ASCCA documentary, a silent horror film, and an original romantic comedy.

The film festival was so successful that we’ll be repeating it throughout the rest of the summer! Any Hollywood talent seekers would find a real hot spot here at Camp ASCCA, and you can catch an exclusive preview by clicking on the video below!

Mr. Charles Higgins Pays Camp ASCCA a Visit

As the intro to our podcast says, there are many “people who make Camp ASCCA special.” Mr. Charles Higgins of Montgomery, Ala. not only makes Camp ASCCA special, he is responsible for making Camp ASCCA happen.

…Mr. Higgins has been involved with Camp ASCCA since the planning stages…

Mr. Higgins has been involved with Camp ASCCA since the planning stages, when he and some others decided that a year-round recreational facility would fulfill some of Alabama’s unmet needs. Mr. Higgins was put in charge of raising money to start Camp ASCCA, and 31 years later, he’s still involved in spreading the word to people who can help.

Yesterday, Mr. Higgins and three friends made a trip to camp to see how things were going. Two of his friends had never been to Camp ASCCA before, and Mr. Higgins says he was glad to see that they finally believed all of the amazing things he has told them about camp!

When Mr. Higgins talks about Camp ASCCA, he can’t hide the sincere excitement and pride he takes in its development and mission. Hear for yourself what Camp ASCCA means to him and a little about his participation in the video below!

Meet Dr. Ben Smith of the First Sertoma Club of Birmingham

Camp ASCCA has been full of special visitors lately, and they’re not just the campers. Many of the people who make Camp ASCCA possible have been coming to check out our new renovations and activities, and one of these special people is Dr. Ben Smith of Birmingham, Ala.

…the First Sertoma Club of Birmingham helps many campers have the opportunity to come to camp…

Dr. Smith is a long-time member of the First Sertoma Club of Birmingham, which once entirely sponsored our first summer session, known as Sertoma Week. The First Sertoma Club still helps many campers have the opportunity to come to camp, and last week Dr. Smith and two other members of the club came to have lunch with our staff and the Session One campers.

According to Dr. Smith, Sertoma’s mission is Service to Mankind, and his club decided that our campers were some of the people most in need of service. The Sertoma Club became personally involved with our camp, making an annual trip during the Sertoma Week.

Dr. Smith has seen many changes and improvements during his years of involvement with Camp ASCCA, and he strongly believes in supporting our efforts. Hear this kind man explain his faith and interest in Camp ASCCA by clicking the video below!

Meet Mobile Rotary Camper Michael Feore!

During yesterday’s afternoon tubing session, Group 3 had a special treat!

…Michael says his favorite thing about Camp ASCCA is “everything”…

Every camper that wanted to ride the tube got to take not only one ride, but two! Mobile Rotary camper Michael Feore was one of those campers.

Michael rode in the tube with his friend, Tammy, and the lifeguard, Lindsey. Michael says the most fun thing was su07_michaelfeore_tubing1.jpggetting to wave at the people in the boat, besides going fast and riding over waves. “I think it’s lots of fun,” Michael says.

He wanted to let everyone know that the lifeguards are “doing good” at their job. Even though he had a great time tubing, Michael says his favorite thing about Camp ASCCA is “everything.” Before tubing, Michael also went to Sports and Games yesterday, where he played hockey, and to Music. “I just like it,” he says.

Daniel Kilpatrick Loves Camp ASCCA!

It’s true that everybody has a great time when they come to Camp ASCCA, but some are more expressive about it than others.  One camper, Daniel Kilpatrick, let me interview him yesterday and wasn’t too shy at all to tell me about Camp ASCCA.

…Daniel played a convincing Danny Zuko in Tuesday night’s talent show, performing “Greased Lightning”…

Daniel played a convincing Danny Zuko in Tuesday night’s talent show, performing “Greased Lightning” with his cabin-mates.  He proudly told me about it on camera, and he also wanted me to know how much fun he had tubing with lifeguard Lindsey Marine. Besides tubing, Daniel also really likes going swimming at camp!

Daniel compares being at Camp ASCCA to “living in heaven” or “on the beach.”  The enthusiasm he brings with him is an asset to camp, and we hope to see him again next year with Mobile Rotary! Meet Daniel for yourself in the video below!

Meet Luke Martin, First Time Counselor

Camp ASCCA is happy to have so many newcomers on our staff this year! One of these newcomers who is doing a particularly great job is Luke Martin from Dothan, AL.

…seeing his campers have fun is what makes camp so enjoyable for him

Luke is a rising junior at the University of Alabama, and he heard about camp from a friend of his who teaches Special Education.  She highly recommended Camp ASCCA to Luke as a place to work this summer, and then she recommended Luke to us!Luke says he’s loving Camp ASCCA so far and that seeing his campers have fun is what makes it so enjoyable for him!  According to Aquatics Director Heather Whyte, Luke has proven to be a real team player and is always helping out his fellow counselors.  According to the Love Note Box, Luke’s pretty eyes have also made him popular among our girl campers!

After his campers finished taking turns on the zipline yesterday, Luke stopped to talk to me.  Check out the video below to meet him yourself!

Meet Robin and James Sears!

Everyone has their own special reason for loving Camp ASCCA. Some look forward to a certain program that they only get to do once a year, some people admit they really like the food, and some people just enjoy having a week-long vacation. Mobile Rotary camper Robin Sears likes coming to camp because of the many friends she has made here.

…Robin has been attending camp for 14 years, and she says it feels like forever…

Robin has been attending camp for 14 years, and she says it feels like forever. In those 14 years, she’s had plenty of time to meet a lot of people, and she excitedly caught up with several of them while waiting to see the nurses.

Robn’s dad, James, really likes Camp ASCCA too, and he says he would encourage parents to send their children to camp because of all of the fun activities he hears about from Robin. He knew several of Robin’s camp friends as well, and was sad to hear that some of them couldn’t make it this year.

Robin is having a great time so far this week, and she has already won an ASCCA Achievement Award. You can meet Robin and James by clicking the video below!

Ricky Passmore Knows and Loves Everything about Camp ASCCA!

Camp ASCCA is full of experts.  We have certified Recreational Therapists, Registered Nurses, staff members that have been here since camp began, and a slew of specialized program instructors.  Some of our top experts, however, don’t actually work here.  They’re the campers themselves!

…Many of  our campers have been coming to camp for so long that they know about almost every activity…

Many of our campers have been coming to camp for so long that they know about almost every activity, and they know everyone’s name.  One of these experts is Mr. Ricky Passmore, a Mobile Rotary camper.  Ricky has  been coming to camp for 19 years, and according to his mom, there is nothing here he hasn’t tried.

Ricky says he likes everything about Camp ASCCA and can’t pick just one favorite thing.  If anyone needs a suggestion on what to do here at camp, I know who can help them!

You can listen to Ricky and his mom, Violeta, talk about Camp ASCCA in the video below!

And the Award Goes to…

The first ASCCA Achievement Awards for this week were given outsu07_awards_ronaldwright.jpg yesterday at lunch, and the Program Staff definitely chose some deserving recipients.

First, Jorja Bell gave the tubing award to Robin Spears. Next, Ronald Wright received the Sports and Games award from Corey Webb. Corey chose Ronald because of his careful

Joe Ray Phillips received an award from Lalane Taylor for his cooperation at the pool, and Nicki Moore presented the Music award to Bill Davis for his enthusiasm. Jonathan Daughtry chose Franklin Reuben for the zipline award for his genuine excitement about the adventure programs!

Perhaps the most deserving award went to Dewey O’Neil. While at Nature, Dewey convinced Kara Graves the monkeys really might live here at Camp ASCCA! This bunch will definitely be tough to match at today’s ASCCA Achievement Awards!

Take Me to Camp ASCCA!

This weekend, about half of Camp ASCCA’s summer staff travelled to Mobile, AL to pick up a very special group of campers.  For this week’s session, the Mobile Rotary Club has sponsored 105 adults with mental disabilities to come to camp, and we chartered three buses to go and get all of them.

…the excitement at the Easter Seals facility was almost too much to handle…

We left camp at about 1:30 on Saturday afternoon, spent the night in Mobile, and started check-in at the Goodwill Easter Seals facility there around 8:30 Sunday morning.  For several hours, the ASCCA staff labelled and sorted luggage, assigned counselors and approved activity releases, and made sure everyone was registered with the nurses.

Mobile Rotary Week is an annual session at Camp ASCCA, and many of these campers have been coming for ten years or more. These returning campers enjoyed catching up with friends and making plans for the week while they waited, and they encouraged the newcomers not to be nervous and to expect a great week!

The excitement at the Easter Seals facility was almost too much too handle.  According to most of the parents, their campers have been counting down to camp for weeks.  In the video below, you can see the excitement for yourself and hear what some campers brought to camp.  Expect to see more interviews and photos soon from check-in and our time at camp!

It’s Not Raining on Our Parade…

Camp ASCCA is finally getting some much needed rain today, but thatsu07_rainyday_love_poetry.jpg unfortunately means that most of our activities have to be cancelled.  Campers may not be going on the zipline or swimming, but with all of the fun stuff Sports and Games leader Corey Webb has up her sleeve, their disappointment hasn’t seemed to last more than a second.

…our program staff  really pulled together with some great games…

When almost the whole camp piled into the pavilion during the second activity rotation this morning, our program staff really pulled together with some great games.  There was a Dress-Your-Counselor relay race, after which the counselors modelled their stylish attire to “Pop Lock and Drop It,” an egg race, and contests to see who could think of the most songs with the words “love” and “baby” in them.  To make sure that the su07_rainyday_pool.jpgsongs weren’t made up by campers or counselors, the different teams had to sing the songs for Corey.

The final contest was to see who could write the best “love poem” to our Camp Director, Matt Rickman.  Under a two-minute time limit, the three teams came up with some impressive and creative rhymes!

Besides all of the crazy games going on in the pavilion, the game room was also open for those who wanted to play air hockey, ping-pong, or pool.  Until we had to walk outside from the pavilion to the dining hall, nobody seemed to mind the rain a bit!

The Demo Farm :: So Much to See and Do!

Besides riflery, I also went to the Demo Farm on Thursday to see what the buzz was all about there. The Demo Farm has less adrenaline-producing elements than some of our other programs, but that doesn’t mean that the campers were bored in the least.

…campers got to pet baby ducks, a rabbit, and hold a real chicken egg

Program Staff member Lacee Andrews is full of interesting facts about all of the different animals, and the campers were completely enthralled. They also got to pet baby ducks, a rabbit, and hold a real chicken egg! Then, there was a turkey-calling contest, and a race to see who could catch and hypnotize a chicken first!

That’s not all Lacee had in store for the campers–they toured the garden, planted a bean plant, and fed and named a new baby goat! Everyone loved the demo farm so much that it was difficult for me to get anyone to stop and let me interview them, and some people wanted to take an animal home with them.

I did manage to get some footoage, however, and you can see some of the excitement for yourself by clicking the video below.

Paul Ayers Gives Back As a Camp ASCCA Counselor

Many of ASCCA’s staff hears about camp because they are Therapeutic Recreation, Nursing, or Special Education majors and are looking for experience in their future career fields. Others decide to major in one of those areas after spending a summer here, and that means that Camp ASCCA has a very knowledgeable and experienced staff. Paul Ayers, a film major at the University of Alabama, has a unique reason for wanting to be a Camp ASCCA counselor.

…Paul remembers going to camp when he was younger, and he says it was always the counselors that made camp fun…

Paul remembers going to camp when he was younger, and he says it was always the counselors that made camp fun. He wanted to return the favor by giving other kids a similar experience, and he learned about Camp ASCCA in his search for a place to do so.

Paul was impressed with Camp ASCCA’s mission, and he says he thinks it is important for our campers to get to go to a summer camp that has no barriers for them. We’re glad he’s here, and he’s doing a great job so far!

Meet Paul and hear about his first week at camp in the video below!

Riflery Is a Fun and Challenging Camp Activity

Thursday morning, I made the rounds to some of the activities that I get to see least often. Riflery–probably because it is stationed on the distant parts of our campus–is one of those activities. I heard so much about it from campers and from instructor Andrew Loftin that I had to go see what it was all about!

…besides all of the excitement of trying and succeeding at something new, riflery is an activity that people of any ability can do…

After spending one activity rotation at the shooting range, I realized why everyone enjoys riflery so much. Not only is this one of our activities that campers don’t get many chances to do outside of camp, but shooting the bull’s eye, or at least close to it, is a huge accomplishment. Everyone in Group 3 was anxious to show me just how many bullets had hit their target!

Besides all of the excitement of trying and succeeding at something new, riflery is an activity that people of any ability can do! Also, with Andrew’s careful instruction and the counselors’ close attention, there is almost no room for accidents. Campers wear ear and eye protection, and they sit safely on benches while waiting their turn.

In the video below, you can catch a glimpse of Andrew’s demonstration and see the pride the campers take in their accomplishments at riflery!

Camp ASCCA’s All about the Red, White and Blue!

When it comes to celebrating the Fourth of July, Camp ASCCA does it right. After rest period yesterday, we had a carnival in the pavilion, complete with face painting, prizes, and a snack bar.

…The entire pavilion was decorated, and some of the Program Staff even wore costumes…

The Program Staff went all out putting together the carnival. The entire pavilion was decorated, and some of them even wore costumes. Prizes could be won at every station, which included a Cake Walk, Bean Bag Toss, Redneck Golf, Freethrows, Bowling, Skeet Ball, the Minnow Race, and Soak Your Counselor.

There was also music blaring the whole time, and the snack bar served lemonade and popcorn, carnival staples. Most of the face painting was patriotic, but there was also some crazy artwork. Anything from the names of crushes to animal prints could be found on campers’ faces!

At Camp ASCCA, our country certainly had a great birthday celebration. You can see for yourself how much fun we had in the video below!

Meet Laura, a First-Time Camper

The Camp ASCCA staff works hard to make sure that each and every camper is having the best week possible when they visit, and we’re always thrilled to see and hear that our efforts are working. Laura, one of our campers this week, is here for the first time and says she already knows she wants to come back!

…Laura has a great time at every activity, and she even won the ASCCA Achievement Award for Horseback yesterday…

Laura has a great time at every activity, and she even won the ASCCA Achievement Award for Horseback yesterday. Katie Stewart chose her as the recipient solely because of her enthusiasm. Hours later, during free-time, Laura was still talking about Velma the horse!

One of Camp ASCCA’s mottoes is “challenge by choice.” This means that while we want our campers to try as many new things as possible at camp, nobody has to do anything that frightens them. Laura was brave enough to ride Velma, but the Treehouse and Zip Tower were a little too tall for her. However, that didn’t keep her from having fun!

Laura has made some great new friends, especially her counselor Lisa Meeder, and enjoys laughing and joking with everyone at the activities. She was more than happy to let me interview her yesterday, and you can meet her for yourself in the video below!

Meet Monique, a Girl Full of Style and Enthusiasm

Cherokee Cabin is full of awesome girls this week! Everyone is so excited about being at camp that they’re dressed and ready to go far before time for flag raise. One camper, Monique, adds a special flair to everything she does.

…her caring and patient personality make her so much fun to have around…

From her beautiful smile to her stylish clothes and bracelets, you can’t help notice Monique as you pass her. She has been coming to camp for three years, and has made many friends here. She says that she and Kara, a member of our program staff, are so close that they keep in touch throughout the year.

It’s no wonder that Monique has made such great friends. Her caring and patient personality make her so much fun to have around! At breakfast, she let her cabin-mate Blayne press the “honk” button on her wheelchair as many times as she wanted, and she’s always inviting new people to eat at her table at meals.

Meet New Counselor Lisa Meeder

One of our first-time counselors this summer, Lisa Meeder, literally stumbled upon Camp ASCCA and knew she had to come back. Lisa is from Peachtree City, GA, and her family has a house on Lake Martin. Her family saw Camp ASCCA while taking out their boat one day, and Lisa researched camp on the internet.

…she says that working at Camp ASCCA will definitely help her academically…

Lisa printed out the counselor application, and now she is spending her summer with us! Lisa is a Nursing major at the University of Virginia, and she says that working at Camp ASCCA will definitely help her academically.

It’s clear that Lisa has a big heart when she interacts with her campers, and she says that working with people is one of the things about nursing that interests her most.

I interviewed Lisa during free time yesterday, and you can hear her talk about her experience so far in the video below!

Meet Counselor Phil Peel of Liverpool, England

It’s not unusual for Camp ASCCA’s staff to come from as far away as Colorado or South Dakota, but few of our counselors come all the way to Jackson’s Gap from overseas! Phil Peel, one of our three international staff members, has travelled all the way to camp from Liverpool, England for his second summer as a counselor.

…he was more than happy to answer other staff members’ questions about wheelchair usage during orientation…

Phil was last at camp in 2001, and has been trying to come back ever since, but he says he hasn’t had a chance until this summer. We’re glad he finally made it! Phil discovered Camp ASCCA through a program called Camp America, which matches up people from other countries with camps in the U.S.

Phil’s hometown isn’t the only thing that makes him unique as a counselor. Phil, like many of our campers, uses a wheelchair. He says his wheelchair hasn’t held him back as a counselor. In fact, he was more than happy to answer other staff members’ questions about wheelchair usage during orientation!

I found Phil by the pool the other day, and he kindly told me about his home and how he feels about Camp ASCCA. You can hear what he had to say in the video below!

Holly Stewart Makes Her Second Round at Camp ASCCA

Holly Stewart is back at Camp ASCCA this summer to be a counselor for the second time! Her bright smile and warm personality make her an excellent person to have on staff, and her campers adore her!

…Hopefully we’ll get to hear her perform in one of our talent shows this summer…

Holly’s sister, Katie, is also spending her second summer as a member of our staff. As a member of the program staff, Katie works with the Demo Farm and horseback riding.

Holly goes to the University of Alabama and is majoring in Nursing. If her abilities as a counselor are any indication, she will be a great nurse someday! An interesting fact about Holly is that she tried out for last season’s American Idol, and she actually did pretty well. Hopefully we’ll get to hear her perform in one of our talent shows this summer!

Watch Holly get some campers ready for horseback riding in the video below!
