Easter Seals Alabama State Meeting
CAMP staff attended the annual Easter Seals Alabama annual meeting and awards luncheon last week in Montgomery. There are many challenges that face not only Camp ASCCA, but the entire Alabama Easter Seals family. Camp will contiue to have strong leadership from its board. While at the meeting we had a chance to speak to a few of our current and past board members. Dr. Jim Krudop, Judge Wade Drinkard, Chair of the Camp ASCCA Board Richard Bollinger and Tom Mann also attend the Friday awards luncheon.
Also in attendance was Mr. Charlie Higgins. Mr. Higgins, while the executive director of Alabama Society for Crippled Children and Adults, was instumental in starting and building Camp ASCCA. Mr. Higgins remains a great friend and supporter of our program.
Immediate past Camp ASCCA chair Judge Drinkard is shown holding his Gold Award he received at the luncheon. See previous post: Easter Seals Alabama’s “Gold Award” for more on Judge Drinkard and his wonderful support of Camp ASCCA.

Easter Seals Alabama’s “Gold Award”
Camp ASCCA’s immediate past chair Judge Wade Drinkard will be this years recipient of Easter Seals Alabama’s “Gold Award”. Judge Drinkard is receiving this award for his outstanding work as a longtime volunteer as well as serving the Chair of the Camp ASCCA Board of Directors during fiscal years 2007 and 2008. He will be honored at the Easter Seals Alabama Annual meeting on December 5th.
With the changes Camp has made in the length of terms for our board members, Judge Drinkard will be the first board chair who will remain on as an active board member. This means that Camp will continue to have the Judge’s great insight and leadership as we go forward.
Easter Seals Alabama’s GOLD AWARD (established 1951)
Presented to Easter Seals volunteers who have contributed in a significant manner to the work of Easter Seals Alabama for no less than five years. Their involvement can be through Easter Seals county chapters, Easter Seals facility boards, Easter Seals corporate board and committees, specific fund raising events that benefit Easter Seals, or other Easter Seals activities.

2008 Hoyt Webb Award Recipient :: Graham Sisson
Annually Camp ASCCA identifies certain individuals who have gone above-and-beyond in
their support of Camp ASCCA, it’s programs, campers, and mission. We present these individuals with an award as a small token of our appreciation of their work.
Our highest award is the “Hoyt Webb Award”. Mr. Webb was one of the original founders and great supporters of Camp ASCCA. He literally provided a “lifetime” of leadership for Camp.
This year Mr. Graham Sisson, Jr. was selected as the recipient of the Hoyt Webb Award. Graham was Chair of the Board at the time that I was selected as administrator. He currently heads the Governors Office On Disabilities (GOOD), as
well as working as Assistant Attorney General with the Department of Rehabilitation Services.
One part of the Camp ASCCA mission is advocacy. There arguably is not a larger advocate for individuals with disabilities in the state than our friend Graham Sisson. He continues to serve as a member of our advisory committee and never fails to return a phone call when we are in need of his many areas of expertise.
Camp ASCCA is so very fortunate to have such a large following of talented individuals and Graham Sisson is a great example.

Pond Management Update
Geni Payne and I have been making plans and discussing the many options for pond management at Camp ASCCA. Upon the completion of the Camp ASCCA Golf an
d Yacht Club, we will have three ponds that we will be managing.
We are fortunate to have a person like Geni on staff. Her experience and contact with the Extension Service of Alabama is a great help to Camp ASCCA. Our goal with the “fishing pond” is to make it a healthy habitat that will produce excellent fishing for our campers.
The two ponds at the golf and yacht location need to be kept clean and healthy as well for pond education and radio controlled boating.
In the upcoming weeks we will be constructing a natural filter system which will not only help manage water quality, but will also provide a great teaching tool for our outdoor education programs.
More to come!

Summer 2007 Offers a Water Challenge :: Drought Doesn’t Stop Programs, Though
This summer is looking more and more challenging for the Camp ASCCA aquatic staff.
…drought conditions have actually had an effect on camp programs as we watch the lake levels slowly drop due to lack of rain…
It is anticipated that Lake Martin could go below winter water levels by July. Staff are already monitoring water levels daily in our tubing program to insure safe passage by our ski boat. Canoeing begins further away from Camp every day.
At the Dadeville Campus, Nathan Waters has done a great job adapting the swimming, fishing and tubing programs by moving them to alternate locations on the campus. We are very fortunate to have a wide variety of other activities that our campers can enjoy regardless of the water level of the lake, but we all very much look forward to having to use a few rainy day activities.
The good news? It did rain yesterday … for about 30 minutes. And, as luck would have it, the rain came while we were in lunch. So, no activities were impacted. Hey, we take what we can get.

John Stephenson :: Administrator Update on Programs and Services at ASCCA
Improvements come in all shapes and sizes at Camp ASCCA.
…change is continuous at Camp ASCCA with all of our facilities being remodeled and program improvements coming along all the time…
This week it ranged from driving to Birmingham to acquire a new canoe to countless phone calls and emails leading up to acquiring T1* service for our facility.
Our goal with all of this remains making our program and facility the best it can be in all areas. Our staff and board do a great job of identifying the need and then finding the right solution.
If done correctly it all leads to better services for our campers.
* Note: T1 refers to a digital transmission link with the capacity of 1.544 Mbps (1,544,000 bits per second.) T1 lines are used for connecting networks across remote distances. It will greatly enhance our communication abilities on site and off.
And, for a bit of an update on what’s coming up at Camp ASCCA … Monday, Camp Seale Harris will move into ASCCA and set up for a series of camps throughout June. Camp ASCCA (Dadeville campus) hosts our second Adult Mentally Disabled camp over near Still Waters. And, the ASCCA program staff - along with PR intern Alisha Smith (Troy University) - will move in and begin summer orientation while also providing program services to Camp Seale Harris, too.
So, Summer Camp 2007 at ASCCA is in full swing. Please come see us!
