Countdown to Summer Camp. . .

Maybe its just me (though I have a pretty solid suspicion its not), but summer camp seems a long way off. . . 191 days until the first day of Session 1. . . but who’s counting? ;-)

So after chatting with Matt and Geni, we here in the office have decided to help pass the months until then with a Countdown to Summer Camp of Camp ASCCA Spirit days!!! This way, not only can you re-live the silliness and excitement that is Camp ASCCA, but you can have a great time doing it!

On the third Thursday of every month, we’re going to to give you a theme for the day. You can dress up as much or as little as you want and if you send us pictures we’ll post them to the website! ca-design-square

The first day will be Thursday, January 15th and we’re going to start out simple with Camp ASCCA Day! This may seem just a bit too easy for all of you Camp ASCCA Super-fans, so we’re throwing you an added challenge: Use the day (and all your crazy-cool Camp gear) to share what Camp ASCCA means to you with someone new.  This could be a friend, relative, or the guy sitting beside you on the bus. Just tell someone about us! Then send us a picture of you in your Camp ASCCA outfit.

And remember ANYONE can participate in these days, whether you’re a camper, volunteer, summer staff, alumni, or just someone who loves Camp ASCCA!

Now get out there and show us your spirit!!!

Santa Claus is Coming to CAMP!

Its hard to believe, but the 2008 Camp ASCCA Christmas Weekend has already come and gone! Last weekend, jj-santatwenty-nine campers arrived at Camp for a wonderful Christmas time. After dinner, we made ornaments & reindeer headbands and decorated cookies. Then, who should appear but SANTA CLAUS! He even brought Mrs. Claus with him! Santa talked with all our campers and heard their Christmas wishes, while Mrs. Claus helped him pass out candy canes.  All too soon though, it was time to sing the Goodnight song and head to bed (Saturday was a big day after all!).

girls_shopping2 After breakfast on Saturday, we loaded up the bus and headed to the mall in Auburn! There we spent a few hours shopping for Christmas presents (and some even saw Santa AGAIN!) aimg_9234nd had lunch. Our campers found some great deals with the help of their counselors, so anyone who opens a present from one of our campers on Christmas morning is in for a surprise! Then it was once again time to load up the bus (this time with shopping bags too) and make our way to the Mountain Creek Inn at Callaway Gardens for dinner.

The wonderful staff at Mountain Creek Inn, not only helped us make it possible for for all of us to alexis_birthday1sit down for dinner all together (no easy task with more than 50 people plus ten wheelchairs) but really made it a special experience for our campers. They even made a special ice cream sundae for one camper’s birthday! The inn was beautiful and the food was fantastic, a perfect setting for a holiday dinner with friends!

Of course, after dinner it was time to see this year’s Fantasy in Lights display. After setting the Christmas music to play in the bus, we started out on the path through the displays. There was a lot of oohh-ing and ahh-ing over the amazing lights. There were flowers and elves, moving animals and the twelve days of Christmas, ice skaters and snowflakes. I can’t imagine a prettier light show! Then, of course, it was time to head back to camp and a well-deserved night’s sleep!charlotte-wrapping

Sunday morning we got up for a late breakfast then spent the morning wrapping all the great presents from the previous day.  In a flurry of wrapping paper and bows, everyone finished just in time to be picked up by parents or guardians.

All in all, it was a fantastic weekend for everyone, and definitely got you in the holiday spirit if you weren’t already! Thank you to everyone who made this weekend possible-our staff, Santa & Mrs. Claus, the folks at Mountain Creek Inn, and, last but not least, all of our campers!

The Splash Pad is here!!

A

After months of planning and construction, the Splash Pad is finally up and running!! At the Splash Pad end of last week, the contractor came out to camp to go over some final details with us about running it and check that everything was working correctly. While there may still be a few kinks to work out of it, those of us here at camp had a great time testing it out Buckets and Water guns over the weekend! Now if the weather cooperates, our first group will get to try it out tomorrow!

Jump right in. . . the water’s fine!

F or the last two weeks or so, the focus of my days has been on getting the pool ready for summer and swimming. So far, it has still be too cold to actually get in the pool, so there’s a bit in the middle that has yet to be vacuumed, but other than that the pool is looking beautiful!

…It won’t be too long before campers will be able to enjoy our clean, clear, and beautiful swimming pool

Luckily for me, Heather came back for a visit last week and showed me what it takes to get the pool going for the season. We got the pump up and running, the right chemicals added, and started brushing and vacuuming away all the leaves that built up over the winter.

ASCCA Celebrates Erin Witschey’s Return to Camp

E rin Witschey was a member of our program staff, doing adventure activities, in 2005 and 2006.

…a graduate of Ashland University in Therapeutic Recreation and a former program staff member at ASCCA…

She reluctantly left for northern climates and worked at a YMCA camp in Pennsylvania for two years. Now, we’ve brought her back to ASCCA as the Director of Aquatics.

We have a video interview coming up, but first check out this audio podcast from Erin about her return.
