With the changes Camp has made in the length of terms for our board members, Judge Drinkard will be the first board chair who will remain on as an active board member. This means that Camp will continue to have the Judge’s great insight and leadership as we go forward.

Easter Seals Alabama’s GOLD AWARD (established 1951)
Presented to Easter Seals volunteers who have contributed in a significant manner to the work of Easter Seals Alabama for no less than five years.  Their involvement can be through Easter Seals county chapters, Easter Seals facility boards, Easter Seals corporate board and committees, specific fund raising events that benefit Easter Seals, or other Easter Seals activities.

opefully not now that we have wonderful new hunting blinds made and donated to us by all the great employees of Zachry Construction.  We have been gearing up for our family deer hunt weekends lately. The fields have been planted and the shooting lanes cleared, but when Percy (Zachry Construction) and Rex (Acts II Remember Outdoors) visited the hunting land they saw a way to help.

The gentlemen were visiting camp because they are going to host a Deer Hunt for children with disabilities here at camp in December.  That brings our deer hunts up to 3 now!!  They were getting the ten cent tour of camp and the hunting land, when I happened to mentioned that we were hoping to get rid of our metal shooting houses and move to wooden ones.  Upon hearing our need, Percy volunteered immediately to help build 5 new houses for us!!! They worked double-time on them and they were delivered last week.

We put them out on their plots and they look fantastic.  They are much larger than our old houses and will be better suited to our campers’ ability levels.  I would like to extend a giant THANK YOU to all the Zachry Construction crew and I hope you know how happy you are going to make some very special hunters!

s a famous tag line from Field of Dreams, but it could just as easily fit with the Give A Push weekend that we just had here at Camp ASCCA.  The guys from Pi Kappa Phi fraternities from colleges all across the southeast and even one from New Mexico; worked on projects all over camp this past weekend.  They built fences, a new deck for the golf and yacht club, and a retaining wall for the new ponds. They also helped lay carpet in the Lions Lodge, clean the camp boats, make new signs, cut down brush around camp, and even helped us get a dock out of the water at the fishing pond.

These young men were everywhere on camp and we hope they know how much we appreciate their hard work.  There is hardly a place on camp that you can turn and not see something built by the Pi Kap brothers.  Thanks so much for giving so much to Camp ASCCA!!!  The Pi Kappa Phi’s national philanthropy organization is Push America and more information can be found on their website at www.pushamerica.org.

Isn’t it a little early to be thinking of next summer you ask? We say its never to early to be making plans for more activities and ways to make camp even more exciting and involved for our campers! I know many of our campers were looking forward to next year (and counting the days til then!) before they even left camp this summer!

So, what we want from you is your ideas and input on theme days for summer 2009. . . and possibly for some surprises before then! Whether you’ll be at camp as a camper, counselor, or even just in spirit, we want to hear from YOU! Our goal is to decide on the majority of our theme days before we start sending out confirmation packets for summer 2009. This way campers (and staff) can know what days to expect when they get to camp and even bring some costumes with them to participate!

tlantic – Pacific Tans Soo Do schools from across the southeast visited Camp ASCCA this past weekend for a black belt retreat.  One hundred and twelve students and teachers spent the weekend working on their karate skills and having lots of fun getting to know each other.

They arrived Friday afternoon and most of the group went straight into a 4 hour black belt test.  The test included a written test as well as how well they preformed during a very impressive three hour physical test on movements, weapons, and breaking.  The rest of the weekend was devoted to workshops for learning new skills and perfecting old ones.  The group also enjoyed the Zip Tower and Archery while at camp.  They even belted a new Master while at camp.

The students ranged in age from 8 to their fifties, proving that this is a sport for all ages and ability levels.  The group was wonderful and all the students were impressive.  I look forward to seeing them again next year.  Check out more photos from the weekend on flicker.

Each two-person team entry of $2,500 included a Sunday night cocktail and dinner event (complete with amazing door prizes) and a full day of golf including breakfast, a sack lunch, and a hamburger cookout.  Golfer goody bags were also presented to the participants.

Rotary Golf Challenge winners for 2008 were: Jimmy Wyrosdick and Buck Noble for net and gross winners were Cole McInnis and Roger Holliday.

In attendance were over three hundred ladies who had arranged each table with a variety of beautiful Christmas decorations.  The ladies’ husbands were the party’s “servers!” This was easily the largest crowd that I have given a full presentation for so far. Since I was on a stage with a head set microphone, I told the audience that I felt like Garth Brooks on wheels! It was a fun night for all.

Our theme this year will be Christmas - The Father’s Gift. He has given us the gift of Hope, Joy, Love and Peace. Our speaker is Allison Wetherbee, who is Director of Public Relations for Camp ASCCA, which is located in Alabama on Lake Martin. Allison was born with no arms or legs, yet, she has earned a Masters Degree without the assistance of hands and fingers to write or turn pages of books or legs to take her to class. She steers her wheel chair with her shoulder and can even put in her own contact lenses. She started going to Camp ASCCA when she was seven and continued until seventeen and now serves the camp as director of public relations. What an inspiration and challenge to be all we can be! We are so blessed to have her with us. She is the niece of our own Barbara and Ersker Mosley.

I want to thank the North Glencoe Baptist Church for inviting me. Also, I want to remind everyone that if you would like to have me speak at your church, I’d love to hear from you. By the end of this year, I will have spoken with sixty civic clubs and almost twenty other speaking engagements including colleges, churches, etc. I would love to add your church or group to my list!

Our highest award is the “Hoyt Webb Award”. Mr. Webb was one of the original founders and great supporters of Camp ASCCA. He literally provided a “lifetime” of leadership for Camp.

This year Mr. Graham Sisson, Jr. was selected as the recipient of the Hoyt Webb Award. Graham was Chair of the Board at the time that I was selected as administrator. He currently heads the Governors Office On Disabilities (GOOD), as well as working as Assistant Attorney General with the Department of Rehabilitation Services.

One part of the Camp ASCCA mission is advocacy. There arguably is not a larger advocate for individuals with disabilities in the state than our friend Graham Sisson. He continues to serve as a member of our advisory committee and never fails to return a phone call when we are in need of his many areas of expertise.

Camp ASCCA is so very fortunate to have such a large following of talented individuals and Graham Sisson is a great example.
