Prom is perhaps the single most memorable event at Camp ASCCA, Alabama’s Special Camp for Children and Adults.

It is certainly one of the most unique and emotional events we have every year. It is a
very visual event. Great stories.

Camp ASCCA is a therapeutic recreation facility. We serve many groups annually from Birmingham, such as Lakeshore, HealthSouth, UAB and many others.

What will you see

  • Six (6) campers from Jefferson county and one (1) from Tuscaloosa county among the almost 100 campers in the session.
  • Three (3) campers from Montgomery county and one (1) from Bullock county, along with approximately 80 other campers from around Alabama, Georgia, Florida and the United States.
  • Sports Camp takes place all week with high functioning teens with disabilities participating in specially designed high adventure recreation and other activities.
  • The Prom event lasts all day. Held during Teen Week, Prom is the reason some campers return to ASCCA each year.

Activities

  • In the morning, campers participate in recreation activities: zipline, pool, tubing, and horseback. Subject to change due to weather, preference of campers.
  • Horsehoe Bend Church decorates with decorations donated by Horseshoe Bend High School.
  • During the afternoon: free choice of activities, but the girls typically get ready for the prom.
  • We begin taking Prom pictures at 5:00 p.m.
  • The banquet begins at 6:00 p.m. and then 6:45 p.m. we present camper awards.
  • The dance starts at 7:15 p.m.

Access to the campers and cabins

  • We offer cabin access to reporters interested in covering the event. Interview the campers as they prepare. Follow them to the banquet and prom.
    1. Catch the preening and primping of preparation for the evening’s dance and banquet. Interview campers and counselors.
    2. Prom dresses are donated/loaned for those campers that do not have one.

    Other Highlights

    • We have a DJ for the dance. (To be announced)
    • The range of disabilities represented in the camper population this week is wide. You’ll see wheelchairs, walkers and other prosthetics and appliances.
    • Most of the campers are quite verbal and eager to chat with you. The counselors are also available. They are the foundation of camp.

Camp ASCCA is proud of, and comfortable with, our programs and staff. You will have unfettered access to any area of camp - within reason. Guys in the girl’s cabins can be arranged, but needs to done in advance. Same for the guy’s cabins.
