Friends of ASCCA: A Look into my Life at College

I’m currently in my sophomore year of college at Auburn University at Montgomery. Last year I experienced what living with roommates is like. I quickly figured out that I do better living without roommates, at least for now. So, at the beginning of this year, I decided it would be best if I moved back home and commute to AUM. That’s what I’ve been doing this semester. I’ve been going back and forth from Montgomery to Birmingham. I only go to AUM on Mondays though. Due to COVID-19, AUM split up the classes to where half of the students go on one day and the other students go on another. The days you don’t attend class, you attend online. Sometimes for a change of scenery, my family goes to our lake house on Lake Martin. I study there too. Also recently our family got a puppy. He’s a 10-week old Goldendoodle and it’s nice having to experience having a dog. I haven’t ever had one before, so I’m learning what that’s like.

My classes overall are going pretty well so far. I’m taking four classes. I’m taking Biology with a lab, Theater Appreciation, Spanish 1010, and English as a Field of Study. My professors are great. I have some accommodations and they work with me when I need help with something.

In regard to my social life, I pushed myself to try to join a sorority this semester. Last year it wasn’t so great for me socially, so I wanted to try again to make friends this year. I’m not going to lie. I was a little hesitant at first to join a sorority because none of my family members were ever in a sorority and also, I didn’t think I would fit the title of “sorority girl.” I quickly realized that there wasn’t a specific title I would have to fit, especially for the sorority I got a bid for. All the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority members have been very kind and accepting towards me. They accepted me from the start. They looked passed my disability and that meant a lot to me.

Being in a sorority has been really fun. I’ve met some great people that are becoming friends of mine. I haven’t really gotten to hang out with them much due to living at home, but I’ve been talking to them a lot through Snapchat and texting. I’m not an official member of Alpha Gam yet. I have to get initiated, but I’ll be initiated sometime in November.
