On Tuesday, April 11th, fifth grade students from St. James School traveled to Camp ASCCA for the school’s annual three-day Environmental Science Camp. After a quick lunch Tuesday afternoon, students were split into five groups that would rotate through the week’s programs. The activity schedule consisted of group elements, zip tower, canoeing, nature Jeopardy, forestry, Living Streams, and Step Out & Fish.
In 1986, Bob Kuykendall was looking for a place to spend his summer making a difference and enjoying life outdoors. He applied to work at Camp ASCCA and fell in love with the campers and staff his first summer. He decided to stick around for two more summers and worked on the program staff as a fishing specialist.
The Alabama Head Injury Foundation arrived at Camp ASCCA on Friday, March 31st, for a weekend of springtime activities and ASCCA programs. Group members arrived Friday afternoon and met with ASCCA Program Director Amber Cotney and Nurse Abbey Murray to check-in for the weekend.
On Saturday, April 1st, volunteers from Sixth Street Baptist Church in Alexander City, Alabama, visited Camp ASCCA for a daylong work party. They worked alongside Aquatics Director Heather Chumney and completed a few projects down at lakefront.
On Saturday, March 25th, District Governor Wendell Harless of the Alabama Central District of Civitans International presented Camp ASCCA with a check donation of $600. Civitans from across the Alabama Central District visited camp during this weekend’s Fun Fish event to work around the campus and improve the facilities. The Civitans have sponsored the fishing weekend for several years.
After months of detailed preparation, it was time for Fun Fish 2017 this weekend. Campers and volunteers ventured to Camp ASCCA on Friday to spend the weekend fishing with their closest friends. Every year in the spring, Camp ASCCA offers a Fun Fish event that lasts an entire weekend and includes fishing on one of the largest man made lakes in the United States, Lake Martin.

Today, Administrator John Stephenson and Marketing Director Dana Rickman traveled to Montgomery for the Kiwanis Club Grant Awards Day. Camp ASCCA was gifted $4,100 by the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery Foundation for the backup power supply for the water delivery system here at camp. This year, the Alabama National Fair raised $245,000, and the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery distributed it to the sponsored organizations.
On March 9th, high school students from throughout South Alabama visited Camp ASCCA for the annual leadership conference, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Each year, more than 50 rotary clubs sponsor a few students from their areas to represent their communities and grow in their leadership abilities. The students and their leaders stay onsite at Camp ASCCA for three nights and spend each day completing team-building activities and learning more about what life is like after high school.
On Saturday, February 27, a group of engineering students from Auburn University visited Camp ASCCA for a member meeting and a day of team building. The students are members of an organization known as the Cupola Engineering Society, and they serve as ambassadors for the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. According to the Auburn University website, the Cupola Engineering Society was developed in the fall of 1996 and was named after the official symbol of the College of Engineering.
Over the weekend, the Alexander City Boy Scout Troop #67 visited Camp ASCCA to spend time in the great outdoors and work on new projects. Different than most groups that visit Camp ASCCA, the boys brought their own tents and camped out by the ASCCA fishing pond.
Camp ASCCA Director of Marketing and Communications, Dana Rickman, visited the town of Evergreen, AL, today to speak with representatives from the local Kiwanis Club. During their meeting, Dana spoke with Tom Nielsen and Patricia Fowler about Camp ASCCA and general updates about what we have planned for this year.
